Could I mix these light fixtures?

Hi Everyone,

I had a previous post on replacing light fixture over island and also, above the the table.

If I were to get the glass pendant lights as pictured ( or similar glass style) , could I mix it with one of the orb chandeliers?

Any preference for the wooden orb ( Rest. hardware ) or the iron one from Ballard? My challenge within this one is that I like the fixture in gold, however, the glass pendants come in ant. Bronze or silver/ Chrome.

Above island...I'm considering 2 of these...

This one from RH ...

Or this one from Ballard...

Yes, on combining them, but I prefer the RH pendant. The Ballard ones look like something from science class - where are the neutrons and protons - and I also think very trendy so will be "out" very soon. And the crystal hanging at the bottom is just not good at all :-(

The RH one, though, is unique but classic and understated at the same time, IMO, so will be great years from now.

I think I'd do the bronze pendants with the gold Ballard iron orb. Very pretty! I'm not a big fan of the RH fixture.

I agree with jlc712, those two are very attractive together. The RH is pretty also, but it looks a bit bulky and heavy.

A cheaper way of doing undercabinet lights is not to hardwire them, just plug them in. I did that when I moved into my house. I made sure all the wires sat flush to the cabinets underneath, using those little clips they make for tv/internet cable wire. (I don't know if there's a product that would have worked better, but I knew about these clips and knew they were cheap.) I carried the cable clips to right above where the fixtures were to plug in, working along the back of the cabinets, making sure there was just enough wire left to plug in, as I didn't want the backsplash are to look messy. It's not as nice as hardwired lighting, but it looks fine to me, and cost next to nothing. (I used very slim fluorescent fixtures, and they cost less than $30 each. You can also get xenon fixtures that plug in, if you like.)

Thanks, everyone! Copper would definitely be a great complement to the oil rubbed bronze, but unfortunately, it's not one of our "builder grade" options. I also love polished nickel - it has a warmer tone that would probably complement ORB better, but it's pricier and more difficult to coordinate with our options throughout the home. I do agree that black and oil rubbed bronze can work together - in fact, our front door is a black metal double door with oil rubbed bronze edging. I do have some brushed gold decor items/accents that I will incorporate (i.e. an etagere, end tables, etc.), but I think we are still limited to some combination of ORB/brushed nickel or ORB/chrome for our kitchen faucet, cabinet hardware, and lighting. So which of those is better? Brushed nickel or chrome?

@suezbell Yes this is a good point and I think part of the problem - the entryway is one place where I'd really like to have the cozy darker fixture but it adjoins the living room with no doorways in between, and the LR then adjoins the dining room. So I worry that it would look mismatched to have the same stretch of ceiling with different finishes. Hmmm.... The hallways may be a good place to have darker fixtures, though the downstairs hallway runs off the DR with all the silver/chrome fixtures (though there's a doorway breaking up the line of the ceiling)

I agree with Jlc, the glass with the Ballard compliment each other very nicely and would be really lovely. I don't care for the RH fixture at all.

I'm also preferring the Ballard one since it's more similar in style (i.e. dark metal and slimmer). Plus, I like the science/orbit aspect :)

I agree with tibbrix. I loved those circle orbity ones when they first came out and was considering them, but do think they are quite trendy. I do like the RH one. Any other options?

Will the fixtures be used over this island and table and chairs? Is there only one electrical hook up over the rectangular table? The fixtures selected should be able to complement the larger scale and casual appearance of the table and chairs.

I'm torn, but doesn't need to be these at all either...

I thought if RH, I'd get up before their friends & family sale ends for 20% off.

Beverly, yes, the glass pendants over my existing island. I believe they come on 2 sizes...I'd go with smaller.

The table & chairs..well, I still haven't figured that one our yet. Will likely get a new table but yes, size would be similar. (78"x 40") Ceilings are standard 8'.

New chairs at some point too...look will still be casual.

I'm pleased you decided to not pursue the sphere pendant. Might be a bit too trendy. Maybe it would be better to select the furnishings first and then the lighting. The table seems to work, but the chairs could be a bit shorter.

I could replace the island lights now and do the other one when I find the right table and chairs. I guess that makes more sense:)

Just came across these pendants from Currey & company.

Preference for these over the ones from Kicheler? (orig. post...1st ones)

I do like the first pendants. That second pendent looks like it would compliment the RH fixture nicely though. But I do really like the shape of the 1st pendants better now that I look at it all together.

Those would be perfect with the RH pendant. I'm leery, though, of clear-glass because of glare and harsh light.

Good points on glare...although do have current pendants on a dimmer.

I thought of using Edison bulbs( for awhile anyways...) Don't mind regular dusting...I guess:)

Saw these 2 lights...more options for over table if I want to go rectangular in shape.

In this situation, I like the seeded glass, with bronze to provide more visual presence, also I like the coordination of fixture styles. There are three single pendant shapes to select from. On sale from PB.

Tibbrix, I've taken a look and it appears that they only come in clear glass.

Great idea with the PB fixtures, but a little heavier than I'd prefer.

It is the Toscana table ( with the x base)that we've been considering:)!

We'd been waiting for the floors to be refinished and now they are, we can move on again to looking at tables. Don't mind so much the $ on a table, but 6 new chairs is pushing the budget right now.

Might try to get to some lighting stores over the next week and have another peek. On a mission only because we have 2 other new fixtures for entrance and bedroom and hoped to deal with kitchen so we'd only need to have electrian come back one more time.
