No trip to Ireland this X-mas, but no Viva Voce
Comments (2)Sweetest Michael, THAT is hilarious. And I do thank you for finding it! I was floored to learn how down-to-earth the professors, etc are, BTW. Even the brilliant ones ;> My High School boyfriends' mothers had WAY bigger chips on their shoulders [I grew up in Faux-LockJawFroufrou Land you might remember]... 'course I was a Suicide Blonde Goth Babe, but that's beside the point [only half-kidding there, frighteningly;]! Actually I'm kind of nutty now [obviously], and even at Oxford. Don't know if there are nuttier in my group but it doesn't seem to bother most of the folks :)...See MoreNeed help planning garden trip to Eng., Ireland and Scotland
Comments (5)One good way to plan a garden tour is to contact various garden tour companies (ads are in most national garden magazines) and look over their itineraries. These garden tours generally touch the major gardens of the UK, Kew, Wisley, Montissfont, Sissinghurst, etc., and they are certainly NOT TO BE MISSED, but there are some 3,000 small private gardens in England that are open in summer, very small admission price, which are listed in the annual Yellow Book. If you've never been to the UK, are not keen on flying by the seat of your pants, why not sign up with a good tour company for your first trip, get a feel for what there is to see and do, let them worry about hotels, meals, admission prices, etc. and just enjoy the scenery. You could visit the UK every year for 20 years, doing different gardens on each trip, and not see it all!...See MoreI'm going to Ireland
Comments (4)I have not traveled to Ireland or with that company, but can tell you to be flexible and buy travel insurance. My last trip cost $7,000. and I had to cancel. Thank goodness I had purchased the insurance. The tour manager is probably a company guide who helps you along the way. Ours helped us through the airports, customs etc.. I tip according to the service I received, good service = good tips. Take lots of film, years down the line, the photos will take you back again, you won't be sorry. On my first trip, a travel companion, said she would keep her memories in her mind. BUT when we returned we had lunch together and I took my photo album. She said, "Oh my, this is like taking the trip all over again". I envy you, my traveling days are over because my husband has Alzheimer's....See MoreTravel books, Ireland and Scotland
Comments (7)Rosefolly, the first book of Diana Gabaldon's series, The Outlander, begins in 1743 and tells a lot of Bonnie Prince Charlie history. You have probably read it, but if not, it does give a lot of background. I also like the Ian Rankin books featuring detective John Rebus, set in Edinburgh and best read in sequence. John Buchan's books are old (I got them from the library) and spoofy but lots of fun. For Ireland, Edward Ruthurfurd has two books, The Princes of Ireland and The Rebels of Ireland for history. And then there are all of Maeve Binchy's novels. What a good trip you are planning. My daughter, sister, and I are going to London for a few days, York overnight, and Edinburgh for a week the last of September. We are looking at day trips from Edinburgh, and friends have given me the names of some tour companies offering them: Rabbie Burns Tours, Timberbush Tours, Haggis Adventures, Highland Experience, and Real Scottish Journeys. You can look at them online and become as confused as to which to take as we are!...See Moreblfenton
