My gardens are doing really well in most places that are highly amended and raised up a little higher. The 3 inches of sand and 4 inches of peat moss all mixed well into the good 7 inches of silty clay loam has surely worked out well..and super for all the rain the past 2 months.

Where some places are not amended much, it really really shows.

Some of my tomatoes died. It was too hot and dry. Now it rains every day. I have 3 cherry tomatoes that survived and a Roma tomato in a 15 gallon pot that is thriving.

Yup, here in upstate NY, we are having the same problem. Rains 80% of the time. May was dry as hell, then the rains came and hardly ever went away. EB on tomatoes so far. Zucchini is like "is this a joke?" And pole beans are growing very slowly. Onions are doing awesome though. Stupid rain needs to GO AWAY!

Some of the same here in north Missouri. Seems like it just about gets dry enough to do some work and it rains again. My tomatoes are getting blight and every time I've sprayed them it rains and washes it away. I don't think this is going to be a very good year.

I am going to try to get my garden a little higher this fall. I'll ask to have the whole manure pile dumped into the garden. There is about four years of compost on that pile. I would love to have a couple truckloads of soil brought in but not practical due to cost. Raised beds would be nice but then we couldn't bring in the tractor to till the garden. The garden is to large to work by hand. I have very good soil in the garden but it seems to be located in a low spot so that doesn't help my situation.

I have enough tomato plants, 65 various varieties, that I will have tomatoes to can even with the blight. It looks as if everything will be very late because of the anemic state of the plants. The Zucchini plants are very small, maybe they will produce by August or September at this rate.

Gardens are definitely a challenge this year but they keep us thinking and scheming ways to overcome the blights, bugs, birds, rabbits, etc. trying to get our plants! It's interesting and fun and keeps us on our toes!

Same here in N.Y. Too much rain. Raining AGAIN today. Sick of it.

This year in then Pacific Northwest we need less sunshine, less heat and more clouds and rain. Although my winter squash vines are 20 feet long already, and their main growing season has scarcely begun.

Record rain here in the western Chicago suburbs in June. My tomato and cucumber plants are on the puny side. But the potato and green bean plants seem to be doing fine.

Same here, and cool weather. I am SO afraid of getting late blight again on the tomatoes for the third year in a row. It's that kind of weather.

Cincinnati here. WAY behind on veggie production because of all the rain. Just hoping for several days of sunshine to make them come alive!

I thought we were supposed to have a few days of sunshine but it rained this morning and it looks like it's going to do it again this afternoon.

It has been raining most of last evening and today. We have only had two days of sunshine this month. I just went out and took this picture. If I didn't have the landscape cloth in the garden, I would not even be able to walk in it since it is just mush that you sink into ankle deep. As you can see the garden shed has lost most of its roof. The young plants inside got soaked. I had to empty the water out of them.

Looks familiar. We are getting a good one right now. I just heard a storm warning predicting 60 mph winds and quarter sized hail. If we get that it's all over for this year.

Helen, our weather has been like yours with record rainfall and flooding. Sett 100 year flood level. Now, all of a sudden, todays heat index is 105 - 110 degrees and the garden is literally cooking. It is so humid that the plants are braising in the humid air. This isn't looking good. Any suggestions on how to help?

the advice is always the same. Grow plants more resistant to climatic conditions. You can get your calories, minerals and vitamins just as well from root crops and cabbage.

But we love to grow tomatoes & Squash! Anyway, this is only the 2nd year that all this rain has happened. How do we know what next year will bring? I used to have to use soaker hose in my garden and actually had to water quite often. I do grow cabbage, broccoli, kolarabi, beets, cucumber, a few potatoes, etc. Root crops are hard when you have standing water in the garden.

Squash plants love rain! So do tomatoes... there is always the chance of fungal and bacterial disease, but these chances can be reduced by planting resistant varieties, using good disease free seed, soil, and compost, improving soil drainage (or building raised beds), improving air flow by providing ample spacing, keeping your plants healthy, and using fungicides/antibacterials, among other things.

I love the plant a variety of things approach.... I don't want to have all my eggs in a single basket. So many things can go wrong with a crop in a year... nothing is a sure thing. This way the garden anxiety is reduced as I know I still have the rest of it if something goes wrong ;)

I am maybe 100 miles north of you, perhaps in a slightly cold microclimate in the Detroit area, and over time I gave up melons, watermelons and okra.

I have reduced tomatoes to 2 beds out of 23. Peppers in containers, and only four eggplants. I like all these, and I love melons. But the combination of disease, short season, and low productivity have pushed me in a different direction. I can't say I miss them much, tomatoes are somewhat inflammatory but daikon and turnips are not.

Safe to say I am in a more "Southern" climate than you, and I myseld wouldn't try cantaloupe again or watermelons... or Butternut for that matter. The season is just too iffy.

Okra is pretty fast DTM... I don't need buckets of it, just enough for a few meals.

The Ace and Biscayne I grew from seed this year are loaded with peppers... there must be 5 dozen on 9 plants. The Hansel and Galine eggplants have had major disease issues (looks like verticillium wilt) but continue to produce in spite of it (especially Hansel.) I am very happy with my varietal choices this year and the seed starting myself.

We're getting hammered with storms right now. We were also pretty dry in May , then in late June it started raing heavily for a couple weeks. My tomatoes have blight, some pepper plants were starting to recover. More storms expected later this afternoon with possible hail, I hope not

I have 32 different varieties of tomatoes and I am keeping track of which tomato variety does better in this weather. I have some that show no signs of fungus and some that show a lot. I think we lost the entire month of June as far as growth is concerned. They just sat there mostly and survived. The tomatoes should be 5' high by now.

I too have given up on watermelon but my butternut squash was fantastic last year. They kept well in the basement until about March. Eggplant did nothing last year. This year I have six plants that have survived but not sure how they will produce this year. Bunnies got into them early in the season. We are going to have Sun and no rain coming up on Wednesday and Thursday.

So glad I planted all of my tomatoes, eggplant, and peppers in fabric pots in 5-1-1 mix this year. I've actually had to water those containers every 2-3 days because the foliage is fantastic (fruit production could be a little better). Picked my first Sunsugar Cherry tomatoes the other day.

njitgrad, Sounds like something I should do, also considering adding some more raised beds. I do have some where I grow Cilantro, Arugula, herbs, lettuce, leeks. We raised our potato plants but only 6 or 8 plants came up. Even in raised areas, they rotted before they came up. I have many cabbage and broccoli starts but can't get them in the ground.

Two nights ago we had a stream running from our neighbor's property and pond thru our property and pond and continued down to the next property and pond. The engineers had fashioned the ponds to flow from one property to another so every Spring we have crawdads, etc. going from one area to another. The grass carp especially like these "little floods".

glib, read the thread. The response will rarely be the same in gardening. Experienced gardeners are aware of that.
