Best tall trees or plants to block second-story view?

Hi all! Our neighbors decided to build a monumental eyesore about 15' behind our back fence that looks directly into our back yard and pool area. We would like to plant something that will block the view, but are limited in both gardening space and by the fact that there are power lines directly above our existing privacy fence. I've included some pictures to give you an idea of what we are working with. Does anybody have any suggestions? I'm leaning toward bamboo at this point.

We live in Oklahoma/Zone 7, if it makes any difference. Thanks!

I think bamboo is a great option given your situation.

OMG! I would be so mad. I'm sorry for you. You aren't allowed to put in a taller privacy fence I guess. The disadvantage of buying a home with an empty lot near it.

Bamboo is definately a great option for you, or move. You choose which one.

You will need a bamboo barrier, which you can buy online, they have instructions on how to contain it. You will need to learn how to care for it, but let me tell you, it is beautiful!

Sorry about the lack of privacy in your sanctuary, because that is what it is.

Buy bamboo and barrier. It'll take a few years to fill in, if you can wait, it will look nice.

hey mickey .... welcome to GW first ... do NOT think lineally .... second.. where are you .. it might make a difference as to what is recommended ... third .... you have a county soil conservation district office ... what you want is commonly called a wind break ... which will serve a different purpose here ... at proper planting time in spring.. the office will offer small plants, ridiculously cheap .... i just got my list last week up here near ann arbor ... call them soon ... and get your order in .. 4th .... plant way back.. since you have 20 acres ... we dont want them coming through and cutting stuff down in the future .... take into account any easements .... and do NOT plant in them ... and most importantly ..... where are you looking from ... your fastest cure to your site line issues.. may be very much closer to your house ... a precisely placed plant ... may block the issue from any one given window ... 5 windows.. 5 plants ... etc ... also take into account.. any patio view .. etc .... but listen very closely to this ... when i moved from suburbia to my 5 acres ... i had a bunch of these issues ... that drove me semi-crazy .... just this last summer, 10 years later .. i was thinking back .... and wondering what the heck i was thinking .... lol if this LITTLE sub station can somehow ruin your view of your 20 acres.. let me suggest that you are fixating on the wrong thing .... get some small plants.. and worry about the other 19 acres ... congrats on your new property ... ken

"Encouraging it to get taller is going to create issues with my neighbor..." As pointed out, the neighbor has a complaint ... but no rights to call the shots on whatever is not on, or directly above, his property. If the problem were resolved, even if it took a little time, the complaint would dissolve. This same dilemma plays out in shopping centers across America. Codes demand that trees be placed along streets or in parking lots. Retailers want their stores and signs seen. So the trees are installed and then the retailers demand that they be pruned like shrubs on stumps so as not to block view of the signs above the storefront! That solution is the expensive, time consuming one that can't do anything but end in deformed trees and an oddball landscape continuing on into perpetuity. If the trees were proactively pruned by chasing the canopy upward creating a view below the canopy, the problem would be resolved once and for all, with less cost and a superior end result: signs and storefronts that are seen AND handsome trees.

Wow! You have a lot of potential here. As there may be code requirements, set back issues or other ordinances, this is a project that could really benefit from a professional landscape architect. It would be money well spent to ensure proper drainage and legal compliance. It could also help you plan the work in phases if the budget dictates.

This post not dead, ha ha. We changed the design a lot. Please comment. Changed almost all roof types to be gable and made all pitches the same (except tower), moved tower toward center of house, moved garage away from house & separated by hallway. Divided the windows into into smaller sections - not so many large panes. We're concluding that our architect is good on technical parts but maybe not so great on aesthetics...hopefully, slowly and surely the visual appeal is improved. The chimney will not be so tall, I'm hoping (code requirement). Main idea is to still have house be pretty tall and most living to take place on 2nd floor & in tower - this is to maximize views. @cpartist One accesses kitchen through LR or other public space, not through MB. We are building an open space to accomodate an elevator later if it's needed. Spiral staircase has been replaced with standard stairs.

Save yourself the worry by going with a clumping bamboo (if you insist on bamboo). (Maybe a runner is not as aggressive in your more arid climate.) I have the clumping Fargesia rufa (Green Panda), but not sure how it would work in your climate, and it will take a few years to get established. But I would not not risk it with a running variety, especially with that pool right there. Also, not sure how bamboo helps you out at all with those POWER LINES.

I would get some suggestions from your local nurseries before planting. Good luck!

Another option is to let the shrubs you already have grow out. Stop trimming them and see how big they get.

The power line looks to me as if it is on the opposite side of the street from the OP, on the new house side. So you could just see how big those shrubs get, are they privet?

If they are some kind of privet, let them grow. Problem already solved.
