watering in a suburban garden...how do you guys do it?
Comments (9)I know just how you feel! Before we put in irrigation, my husband swore that his Native American name would be DANCES WITH HOSES. I put in the Drip Works dribbler systems in all my rose beds, so I just had to hook a hose to it and leave it on until the roses got a good deep soak. I found they were much more efficient than the soakers, and last a lot longer. But we did have to move hoses from bed to bed to do that. A good 3-4" of mulch helps hold in the moisture. When we finally put in irrigation (truly the 8th wonder of the world) they just hooked the irrigation system into the dribbler system, so I could keep watering the roses from the bottom instead of overhead. The other pre-irrigation helper was our 'tractor' sprinkler - they really are neat - you just lay out your hose around the garden where you wish to water, hook the traveling unit to the end of the hose and let it water the garden, following the track of the hose. It saved a lot of hose hauling, but I still preferred to water the rose beds at the base instead of overhead. Comments (15)I am in Stuart, about the same latitude. However you will be warmer in the summer and cooler in the winter. Most of the time. When the prevailing Southeaster are blowing. Bur a westerly wind will make me very hot. The gulf stream plays a big influence from the southern tip of Florida to a little north of Stuart along the Sea board. Controlling the water is best. But I have a lot of plants mounted on trees. They get all the rain. Do you have the orchids or will you be building a collection? How many plants in total? What if your shade/screen is too dark? My lexan area is about 12 x 19. Intentionally small because that is what I heat. It is a small rectangle jutting out from the main pool enclosure. The heating area gets overcrowded in the winter. On cold nights all the bloomers come in the house and the UV pvc gets rolled down and wiggle wired in place. When closed tight and I water it is like a cloud. It dissipates quick. I must be ready to open some flaps when the sun comes out or the plants will cook. Are you planning on creating a human space?...See MoreHow do you clean your original windows??
Comments (9)You're supposed to clean them? LOL. My technique involves removing the lower sash so I can clean the outside of them (2nd floor) once a year. The stop bead pulls off, then I can disconnect the sash cord and turn the window inward enough to reach. I can contort myself out and sit on the sill to wash the outside of the upper sash. For my upper front windows I walk out on the porch roof. The triple-track storms are more of a problem to clean, since the white factory-applied finish is very chalky, and smears onto the glass. I try to do windows before x-mas, and again when winter is over. Something to do with the low sun angle shining through filthy windows bothers me, I guess. Casey...See Morehow do you grow tomatoes?
Comments (29)Sarah, Capulin is a fake cherry :), it's good for people that can't grow real ones. Since I can grow real ones, I'm not exactly sure why I have a capulin tree, well I did have one, but it had some fruit last year and the birds ate it, now there seems to be hundreds! all over the property...... at least :p ooops oh well the birds will be fat and happy, I expect there will be capulin trees all over the country if they spread this good, lots of people have them planted so it wont take long for the capulin forests to converge into each other and make the whole country a capulin forest. :p You might think I'm exagerating it's weed potential but I'm not : ), it's very impressive...See Morestephanie_h12
