Personally, I would advise simply clicking the 'Action' menu at the top and choose Scan for Hardware Changes.

Intel(R) ICH8DH LPC Interface Controller - 2812 is a part of your mainboard chipset. Did you recently reinstall Windows?

You typically would install the chipset drivers before anything else after a Windows reload.

I generally try to keep things up to date. I'd want to know what the unknown device is and fix it.

I'll apologize if I have it wrong, but if my recollection is right, this guy has a history of tinkering with things best left alone and causing himself problems as a result. Not learning from past mistakes. I start every story with a clean sheet of paper but this one seemed like another episode of the same.

I support DA's attitude...for the most part. If I upgrade a driver, I do it myself from the device management page and only then if I'm having problems with the particular piece of equipment/device. I, too, was offered the Intel driver you're mentioning a few days ago and I ducked it. A review of all of my Intel products did not suggest an upgrade to any of their drivers was necessary. That was enough to convince me that I didn't need it.

Just a personal thought...I think we Win 7 - 8 owners are going to see a lot of these type of updates offered now that Win 10 is out there and being installed for free on current Win 7 - 8 systems. I think it's MS's way of upgrading Win 7 - 8 systems to accept the new demands that Win 10 will make on it. I'm being very cautious about what updates/upgrades I install these days....reading all the documentation/facts that come with the proposed upgrade/update.

I make note of an update or upgrade. I review it's benefit. I determine if I need it. If not, I make note of where it is available for possible future use. To change just to change? Not my protocol.

Over the last 20 years or more, I'd guess more than 2 dozen PCs have passed though my household of us and the kids. Home computers, laptops (including for college and grad school), etc. Until my kids were older, I was the tech support department for all of them and continue to be for the handful of PCs still active in the house.

I've never updated a driver. Never. Have I been mistaken or done something wrong by not doing so? I don't think so.

The Device Manager page? I've been there perhaps twice. As I recall (it's been awhile), I think both times involved trying to get a PC to recognize a new device when Plug and Play seemed to not be working right. The outcome? Rebooting the machine fixed the problem each time.

A system device without a properly functioning driver, such that the system can't make use of the device, will be tagged with a yellow (or maybe red) exclamation mark, and may appear in the "Other Devices" section rather than the section related to the actual device classification (since the OS doesn't know what kind of device is it without the proper driver).

If the device of question is causing problems and preventing the user from running something that's needed, then the problem should be corrected. If no operational problems are apparent then perhaps the situation can be ignored.
