Help, what's wrong with my peppers
Comments (5)Thanks guys. I didn't think it was, because it's really not hot where they are. But I'll try and move them where they get shade from the afternoon sun. Another question: will these plants produce more fruit than just this season? Do I keep them around and prune them back? Or should I just let them die and replant again? I've read different reports about how long pepper plants will live in good growing conditions. Some people say a few years. Any thoughts?...See MoreSomething is wrong with my roses -- need advice
Comments (5)Same thing here...it's the March rain. More rain just as buds were developing and new foliage appearing. Bad timing for the roses, but we do need rain. Probably the first flush will have some damage, but the second flush will be more impressive because of all the rain. It's part of gardening, we must grin and bear it and remember drought and watering restrictions would be worse!...See MoreHelp - something is wrong with my peonies
Comments (4)4 years ago, I transplanted a chunk of a huge peony plant in March (I know now that it was the wrong time of year to do that) and I buried them too deep. 2 autumns ago I raised it up to it's preferred height. The plant has over a dozen stems and is thick and getting thicker each year. It has yet to flower or to even suggest that it is willing to flower. Will this peony ever forgive me and bloom? I live on the line between zone 4 and 5 in south central Maine and many of my neighbors have beautiful peonies....See MoreHelp! Somethings wrong with my Trachy!
Comments (13)I agree that it has finished growing for the season. I just wanted to add my experience with winter protection. I went overkill and built a small temporary enclosure the last 2 years. I kept an electric heater inside to keep the temps no lower than 20 degrees. The enclosure was 1/2" plywood except for the southern wall which was twin wall polycarbonate. I had no venting whatsoever. The night temps were controlled by the thermostat and the day temps sometimes reached 100 degrees indicated by the thermometer inside exposed to the sun. I was worried about the heat, but both years the palm came through just fine. I never once watered the palm from late November through mid March. One thing that probably helped me buffer the sometimes extreme heat was the many jugs of water I had surrounding the trunk. These jugs also acted as "phase change material" during cold weather. The heater didn't run very much at all, only on the single digit nights. I wish there was an affordable phase change material for the greenhouse I keep no lower than 55 degrees....See MoreFrank Kuperman
