Comments (80)I fortunately have seen very few JBs this year, although other nasties have been munching on my rose buds. I think the culprits are grasshoppers and katydids. I recently planted roses and killed every grub that I dug up. It has been dry here. I don't know if this helps, although it's not good for my gardens or our well. I also don't have a lawn, just perennial/rose beds and gravel paths. I'm hoping that maybe the grubs aren't finding enough to eat since no expanse of lawn roots for them to feed on. A question about Milky Spore. Can it be used in garden beds or is it only for use with lawns? I'm not sure how the nematode is spread. Comments (7)"Bottom line? IMO..so much money was involved here that one would be hard pressed to find a politician that did or does not have his hand in the cookie jar somehow, some way." Here are a few more folks who have made out handsomely at the communal 'cookie jar'. Namely, Henry Paulson and his close circle of friends... Who is Henry Paulson? By Tom Eley September 23, 2008 The plan to rescue the US financial industry arrogates virtually unlimited money and power over the financial affairs of the state to the office of Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson. Paulson is a figure with a long history of intimate connections to the political and financial elite. In 1970, fresh from the Masters program of the Harvard Business School, Paulson entered the Nixon administration, working first as staff assistant to the assistant secretary of defense. In 1972-73, Paulson worked as office assistant to John Erlichman, assistant to the president for domestic affairs. Erlichman was one of the key figures involved in organizing President Richard Nixon's notorious plumbers' unit that carried out illegal covert operations against the president's political opponents, including espionage, blackmail, and revenge. Ehlichman resigned in 1973, and in 1975 he was convicted of obstruction of justice, perjury, and conspiracy, and was imprisoned for 18 months. Utilizing his connections, Paulson went to work for Goldman Sachs in 1974. In a 2007 feature, the British newspaper the Guardian wrote, Not only was he well connected enough to get the job [in the Nixon White House], but well connected enough to resign in the thick of the Watergate scandal without ever getting caught up in the fallout. He went straight to Goldman back home in Illinois.... A link that might be useful: www.wsws.org/articles/2008/sep2008/paul-s23.shtml...See MoreRRD prevention ?
Comments (63)Hi Springrose: Your roses are healthy. Thanks for those pics of normal growth. I wasted time in the past defending myself when someone in CA accused the mail-man of giving my rose RRD. She INSISTED that the mite got blown by wind, hitch-hiked on the mail-man's truck, and then the wind blew that mite on my RRD rose !! Some folks promote scary myths without caring to check for facts. Never mind that rose is 50 feet away from the mailbox, with bunch of trees & bushes protecting it from the mailbox, plus it's right in front of a bunch of other roses (none get RRD). I know what I did wrong 4 years ago: I dumped sulfur on that RRD rose, since it's a multiflora, and multiflora is very pale in my alkaline clay. Monitor soil pH is a good idea. RRD is rare in alkaline regions like California and Chicagoland. My soil pH is near 8, only one RRD rose among the hundreds that I planted for the past 30 years. My sister is in Southern CA, none of her roses for the past 30 years have RRD. Same with Seaweed who post here, with 250+ roses, none of her roses have RRD. Both have alkaline clay like mine. None of my other roses get RRD, and Chicagoland is very windy. I get my roof fixed yearly, with shingles constantly blown off from the roof. Today I canceled one claim with State Farm, since it looks bad on my record to have so many roof-claims. Among Cantigny's park of 1,200 roses, only one RRD last year on Pink Traviata. That's ONE case out of my 30 years of frequent visit to the park. Why? Some hired worker dumped a bunch of sulfur on Traviata, without knowing that's a Romantica rose, and Romantica French Meilland roses DON'T like it acidic .. leaves & stems become thinner. Soil on the east coast is more acidic, thus more prone to RRD. More rain on the east coast, and pH of rain is 5.6, slightly acidic. Since my tap water is near 9, one summer I put some vinegar to lower my tap water, down to rain water (pH 5.6). After I water a few roses with that slightly acidic water, roses' leaves became THINNER. So I quit doing that. RRD mite doesn't have teeth, but it has fang to suck to gain entry, and when the soil is acidic, less potassium and calcium are available, thus the tissue is thinner, more susceptible for RRD-mite's invasion. People don't realize that the more rain one has (like the East coast), the more acidic the soil become, plus less potassium since potassium mobility is a 3, it leaches out with rain. Potassium's role is to strengthen plants' tissue against fungal and pests....See MoreRRD information email from Dr. Mark Windham to me yesterday.
Comments (27)I am not sure anyone knows yet whether RRD can be spread with pruners. I think it's possible so I play it safe and do a lot of sterilizing. I haven't seen any RRD in two years either. Sometimes I wonder if the Bayer spray I use for blackspot makes the roses unappealing to the mites. Not saying that's so, but I wonder. I have not been spraying miticide but it's good to know about Forbid. I'm sorry to hear about your losses, Austin. That's hard. I lost my dear dog several years ago. I did a lot of looking at pictures of Dobermans when I wanted to get a new dog. Austin is so beautiful, and I think Doberman's are just beautiful. I heard they are devoted and are velcro dogs. But one breeder said you have to be very firm with a Doberman and be an alpha with them, or they might be unmanageable. What do you think of that? Your little Elon is very cute, Ben. I ended up getting three Manchester Terriers that look like little Dobermans. They are also velcro dogs, very people oriented. I think I do better with small dogs. If they act up, I can just pick them up. They do act up! One time they got into a box of cake flour and got it all over. You can see that walking them all together is a little tricky. We also have a tiny Miniature Pinscher who is about 17 years old. Here is a painting my son gave me of the dog we lost. He was 13, died of cancer. I named a rose seedling after him. Jack Daniel. From this photo He was lightening fast. Loved to get outside and take off like a streak down the street. In this picture he was running free. Happy. You couldn't catch him but if you called out , " cheese" you could often get him to come in and we'd give him a mozzarella stick. Neighbors called out " cheese" also. We got a little gate to put in front of the front door that helped to keep him from slipping out. But he was a runner, beautiful when running. Jack Daniel rose...See Morediane_nj 6b/7a
