Hi Carrie, the bermuda will not start to green up until April or so. Any temps freezing will set that back. I have dwarf gardenias that were badly damaged by a late frost a few years ago. I thought they were gone, but they came back. Yours probably will to, just give them some time. With any new plantings, they can be sensitive. Make sure to keep them watered if it doesn't rain.

Okay, so... I couldn't grow gardenias. Killed so many, many, many of them. And then I got really angry (motivated) and decided to teach myself to grow awesome gardenias this LIFETIME. It took hours and hours of googling, and a 18 months worth of trial error. But ... I got there. Here's how to grow gardenias that have always have deep green lush leaves and when in bloom, big, creamy, beautiful blooms: 1. Grow Gardenias in one mix only: Al's 511 mix (you can read about it at the container forum - expert Al Tapla is a huge help) because they absolutely ADORE that potting mix. 2. Crock gardenia pots - put your pot up on proper crocks or just use rocks/stones to ensure that they can always drain well. 3. In my zone at least (z11) gardenias DO NOT WANT FULL SUN despite what everyone says. They wanted dappled sun. 4. Gardenias love rhododendron azalea granular fert like we might love...a roast - we think its delish and we want it regularly! They're heavy feeders - particularly in the 511 mix, so I feed mine slow-release granular rhodo fert every six weeks. 5. In between, the granular rhodo fert, they are seriously partial to an epsom salt with vinegar drink. In one 9L bucket, I put 1TBS epsom salts and 2TBS white vinegar and give a soil/potting mix drench. 6. Only for the brave of heart: they love urine. 1 part urine to 15 parts water. I do this whenever I see their leaf veins yellowing (its a call for nitrogen). You could just as easily feed them some teabags or crushed coffee beans that week. I just find it easier to wee in a bucket (morning's first is more nutrient dense, btw), water it down, apply to their potting mix and ... that's the end of the yellowing leaf veins. 7. Mine don't go chlorific (green veins, yellow leaves) anymore, but during my 'Intense learning period', if they did this, I'd feed them some Iron Chelates (available from your garden centre no doubt). 8. Mine have just got their first infestation of mealy bugs ever (we're having some strange weather, I blame that!), so that has yellowed their leaves and created the tip burn that I see in your photos too. I've googled and it's simply a matter of using a cotton tip bud to apply rubbing alcohol to the bugs themselves (googling info advises not to let the alcohol touch the plant too much) and a hose down and be sure to check potting mix for mealy bugs as well. I reckon these practices will see you straight - and if nothing else, they'll keep you NICE AND BUSY! (as they do me - but... gardenias are my top5 favourites, so I"m happy to put in the effort...because when they bloom, oh my...and I really enjoy seeing that deep green foliage all year... so much more relaxing than seeing the brown yellowing leaves I'd been looking at for years previous!) Not to scare you, but that gardenia you have? It knows you want it to LIVE. THAT is why it's dying, just out of pure, unadulterated SPITE. It can read your mind you know. They sense fear and they WILL die because they KNOW you are a novice. Coincidentally, I was going to come on here to post what happened to the gardenia I sent my mom for mothers day, it produced a SINGLE small flower and had a second bud, but that turned black and fell off. Oh, and it's got spider mites as well. So much for 1800 flowers. I actually was able to keep a gardenia alive (more or less) for a few years. The plant terrified me, which I think helped keep it alive because it must use the aura of human fear as some sort of food. I kept the accursed thing partly shaded, watered it with dilute pee water (I tried blood sacrifices too) and it kept me 'happy' by putting out green leaves and actually threw me a couple of blooms just so I wouldn't throw it off my back deck (like I did with a banana plant). BUT...after a few years, it just started slowly becoming more decrepit (just because it could!), and then finally started melting into dust....I swear I could hear it giggling faintly as I wept over the lousy (expletive). If you still want to torture yourself and try to keep it alive, here is what advice I can give you. Take it for what it's worth. First. Prostrate yourself in front of it while chanting the following: "OH GREAT GARDENIA, Please grace me with one of your blooms! Please please please! I beg of you! I am totally in your power! I will do whatever thy asks of me!! Your wish is my command oh Great Gardenia!" Repeat three times for added oomph. Second. They love to be humidified, spritz with water all the time. I even got some cuttings to root, I put them in good dirt and put a plastic bag over them and they loved that. If you have a huge plastic bag you can put the plant in, so much the better. They like moist soil, but not wet. They like water, but not too much. They need to not be waterlogged, but don't let them dry out. Third. They need a 10 degree (minimum) temperature change during the day/night. Fourth. They do like pee, just don't eat a whole bag of salty potato chips before using the pee. I've killed pee loving plants that way. Tell them when you water them with it that this is one of the many gifts you will bestow upon the Great Gardenia if it will bless you with a single frigging flower. Just don't be sarcastic, they hate that. Fifth. Don't fertilize them when they have buds, or they'll laugh and drop them just like that. So far that's all I can think of. They also like acid soil, so if you do fertilize, keep that in mind. I have NO idea how these things can grow in the wilds of Asia. I think they are demonically possessed alien plants that came here on a spaceship for the SOLE purpose of driving nice, kind, well meaning gardeners into an early grave or the psych ward.
