JemDandy, is that a fiddle-head? The edible part of the fern when it's emerging?

That would be too emerged for fiddle heads. Normally they are very tightly wound still and low to the ground at the point when you pick them.

You're right LM3. I do know what fiddle-heads look like. Now I know what a fiddle-leaf fern looks like!

Jasdip, I saw them in Foodland for the first time ever this year. We thought about grabbing some from our back woods this year but there are too many varieties of ferns back there and I wasn't sure if I'd poison the entire family. I've seen people advertise on kijiji offering to pay people for fiddleheads and morels. They buy them and sell them. I guess there is a huge market for it.

Doubt this is a fiddle-head. Especially not an edible one. It's just a fern. The edible types of ferns are rare in my part of the province.

I just googled fiddle leaf fern and I can't find any reference to it.

Casey, I think they are Ostrich Ferns that get picked for fiddleheads, but not 100%. You could try that in google.

Ok, I looked it up and it is Ostrich fern, but also found out people have gotten very sick from eating them due to not cooking them long enough.... good to know.

Little monkey, yes I know they are ostrich ferns, there's a sign at the Botanical Garden here talking about fiddleheads, that's how I know they are rare in our part of the province. I was referring to what jemdandy called them, "Fiddle Leaf Ferns", not fiddleheads.
