How far away from the wall do I plant in a raised bed?
Comments (4)promethean_spark's "1/2 the normal plant spacing" works for me as well for most things. A couple of points to keep in mind: (1) the concrete will absorb and retain heat longer so while some plant roots will benefit from that extra heat in the early spring, it can be a plant killer in mid-summer. Plan accordingly. (2) If you plant tall things like tomatoes and peppers or corn near the outside edge it makes it quite difficult to reach the middle of the bed for care and harvesting. Plan to keep the tallest items in the center of the bed. Dave...See MoreTips on keeping cows away from pumpkin vines
Comments (6)There is a smallish, solar-powered, electric fence charger, for under $100. If you get one of them, and run a strand of electric wire around the planned patch, it should keep the cows out. If you put a notice up in the local feed store, etc., you might get one used for less. The larger version says it is good for a couple of miles of fence, so a little one should do for a pumpkin patch. You just mount it on a T-post, facing south, and pound in a ground rod next to it. It will need to charge for a full day before you hook it to the fence, but you can do that prior to building the fence. It has a battery, so it can cope with a few cloudy days. And, as nosy as cows are, I would put the post and charger INSIDE the fence! If solar won't work because of too little sun, there are battery powered ones, running off either 9-volt batteries or car batteries. You do need to change the batteries, but they should keep the cows away. As far as I know, cows will eat ripe pumpkins, so they will probably eat the vines and immature ones as well. You WILL have to direct the vines back inside the fence as they grow, since they spread far and wide. If your grandad has any spoiled hay, it would make a good mulch, keeping the pumpkins off the wet ground and keeping the soil moster, making watering less critical....See MoreHow do I keep squirrels away from my nuts?

Comments (12)You have a couple of options - reduce the light (so the plants use less water,) or provide them with enough water to last 1 - 3 weeks. Herbs and flowering plants need a lot of light, so setting them in the bathtub may not work for them, although it should be fine for the ferns. You can set your plants up with self-watering systems, which may mean less work for you even when you're home, since you won't have to be watering every few days. Or if you like the way you're doing it generally, try this: When you get ready to go away, move the plants away from the windows 2 or 3', and set each of the pots in a dish. Water your plants, and allow a runoff of 2 or 3" to build up in the drainage dish. You'll just leave the water there, it will provide the moisture for the soil. When you come back, remove the plants from the water (if there's any left,) and allow the soil to dry out enough so that it is barely damp, or however it usually is when you water normally. The plants will not be harmed by sitting in wet soil for a couple of weeks. This is basically what happens with self-watering systems, unless you have one of the sophisticated ones that have moisture sensing devices that release water only when the soil is dry. Roots don't "sip" water when they need it - they're little gluttons, and will suck up whatever is there, for as long as it's there....See Morejakabedy
