Any harmless way to keep squirrels away from bulbs?
Comments (21)Emerogork2, what lovely bulb flowers you have! If mine turn out half as beautiful as yours next spring, I'd be happy. We are back from the nursery. This is our plan: - 1/2" chicken wire underneath the bulbs - "basket" style (soil would, of course, be layered first on top of the wire, then bulbs); - 1" chicken wire on top of the soil, then add mulch to cover it. A nurseryman advised us to get garden staples and we bought some before seeing pitimpani's post. We had an "aha!" moment and wondered why we didn't think of a simpler solution such as bricks, but I guess it's part of being a newbie gardener. We will still use a few bricks and save some staples for the future. Thanks a bunch to all! What a wonderful forum....See MoreHow can I keep the raccoons away from my apple tree?
Comments (9)I use wire fencing to keep critters away from certain plants. I collect throwaway rolls of wire fencing with a 2 x 4 inch grid. I like it a little rusty, because it's nearly invisible in the garden. I cut pieces, usually about 2 feet high, and encircle the plants to keep out critters like woodchucks. Woodchucks can dig under and climb over a fence that high, except that I cut the fencing so that pokey wire ends stick out of the top and bottom. They are very sharp, so nothing has tried to climb over it. I have to watch out not to skewer myself in the garden, and it's probably not the best method to use if you have little children running around. Maybe something like that would work around your apple tree?...See MoreHow do I keep squirrels away from my growing tomatoes?
Comments (20)Loretta, at the risk of being chastised for hijacking the thread ... If it is squirrels in there, they most likely will not go away until spring, when they and their babies (raised in your attic) will move back to their summer home. In the meantime, for their winter nest they'll make use of anything you have so thoughtfully placed up there for them: boxes, fabric (they seem to particularly like Barbie clothes), fiberglass insulation ... shavings from the electric wiring insulation (guess they like a little texture in their bedding). The babies, having been born and reared inside, will think that's their rightful place and, like salmon, will be determined to return every winter to your - or a neighbor's - attic. They will chew through walls to do so. They literally tore out our soffit vents and when we secured those they chewed through the cedar shakes, vapor barrier and sheathing to get into the house. I used to think squirrels were cute ... now I have to agree with my husband: they're tree rats. Please don't ignore them. Diane...See MoreHow do I keep my danged mulch from blowing away?
Comments (3)Kathi, There's a reason that the most famous song about Oklahoma, from the musical of the same name, has this line: "Oklahoma! Where the wind comes sweepin' down the plain." This is a common question and everyone has their own little tricks to keep the mulch in place. A lot just depends on your particular topography though because you're always going to have trouble if you are in a high, exposed location without any windbreaks around. I've linked a recent, previous discussion for you below. Other people may also throw in their two cents worth here. As for the rubber mulch, I don't really know why it would stay in place any better unless it is really, really significantly heavier. And, I also wonder if it would wash away in a heavy thunderstorm. Maybe someone who has tried it will let you know. Dawn Here is a link that might be useful: Previous Mulch Discussion...See Morenyssaman
