Bare root in pot or ground?

I bought 8 bare root trees from Arbor Day. They mailed them end of May, and I planted the trees immediately. All of them had leaf out by now, except a Washington Hawthorn. I contacted Arbor Day and they said I should give it another 4 weeks to break dormancy. I scratched the bark and it is green, so it is still alive.

First, I planted in the ground, but I decided that it would get too big for the place, so I replace my Hawthorn for a Jane Magnolia, putting the Hawthorn in a pot.

So, what I would like to know is if is better to keep it in a pot, or should I put it back in the ground? What would give it the best chances to survive? In case it breaks dormancy, should I bring it inside during winter to keep growing?

The lady from Arbor Day mentioned to bury the pot in ground to control better the temperature. What does that mean?
