Mistake - blood meal instead of bone meal
Comments (9)If you ask a person how they do something they've done successfully for a long while, or even a short while, you're going to get vast and divergent viewpoints on what practices led to their success. So I just read and take into account different climates, soils, and all the variables and just end up doing what works for me. What else can one do? Sift through the available info, trial and error, and do what works for you in your area. PD: Regarding the fertilizer-- the article mentioned 'time- released' which I have used many years and it specifically needs to be in the uppermost layers of soil to be activated by warmer temps. So 'on top of the tuber' makes perfect sense to me. I would say 'on top of the root zone' is more apt, but the writer doesn't know dahlias. Russ, regarding the verbage about 'cutting before the frost' one would have to be Kreskin-esque to pull that off, I agree! I pass that commentary off to creative license by the writer, not the grower. My DH and I often giggle and guffaw when we read newspaper articles written by a layperson about subjects they cover familiar to us but not them, and they just muddle up completely at times. So a grain of salt is advised when reading a casual source such as HGTV or any other topical source including magazines. If you want to get the scoop on doing dahlias, stick with the ADS or dahlia societies' guidelines for your area, and even then you're likely to get many different opinions and ideas. That's the fun of it: what will work best for you in your area?...See MoreLooking for suggestions of meals to can
Comments (3)You are right that many people will unknowingly throw just about anything in a jar, run it through a pressure canner for an estimated amount of time and call it a safe meal in a jar. Some claim you can safely can meatloaf, beans and weenies, chicken and noodles, or shrimp creole. NOT! Unfortunately many of them are botulism disasters just waiting to happen and only luck has been in play, not safety. :) But the goal in canning really isn't a meal in a jar. It is ready to use canned ingredients for making a meal after opening. Jars of preserved things to which you can add noodles or serve over rice or potatoes AFTER opening the jar. So basically the approved meals-in-a-jar consist of soups, stews, and chili. Ingredients have some flexability but it is limited. No thickeners, no rice, pasta, oil, dairy, etc. But meat and vegetable mixes are fine as long as each ingredients is prepared per its guidelines. For ex: with chili the beans are pre-soaked and the meat is pre-cooked. Soups need to follow the 1/2 and 1/2 rule - half solids and half liquids. NCHFP gives the recipe for chili and soups and both of the Ball books contain several soup and stew recipes such as Beef in Wine Sauce and Beef or Chicken Stew. Then there is canned Chicken or Tuna to make into tuna salad or chicken and dumplings after opening. Hope this helps. Dave...See MoreMeals to Send Ideas/ Suggestions?
Comments (10)Thanks for the ideas! I thought that I could measure out and pack the dry ingredients for simple easy step meals and include the recipe card all together in a single pack/ bag so that Dad or my nieces could just throw it together. I'd pack about 4 meals or so into a box and mail it weekly. I'd also include a grocery list in each box for all of the wet ingredients or meat that would go into the recipes. Then all Dad would have to do is shop and then all they would need to do is measure out the wet ingredients and throw it all together. I'd also include a gift cert. to a local pizza shop or something else that is nearby. I really like the soup idea - there are so many good dry mixes out there! And I know she likes all kinds of breads! It's a shame that I can't get the Martha Stewart mac and cheese to her that I make and she requests all of teh time when we're together! Too many steps and ingredients for Dad or the kids to handle. I will def. check out the Wife Saver store - sounds perfect! Any little bit to help. Thank you for your thoughts - I will begin researching simple recipes to put together for them. Annie - my daughter's name is Eleri!...See MoreSuggestions for dish for a Halal meal?
Comments (3)If I received that invitation I would consider it a challenge to make something very "American BBQ" but still following the Halal rules. Thinking of something like baked beans....without a piece of bacon!! Or a vegetarian pumpkin pie using vegetable shortening in the crust and soy milk....or coleslaw or deviled eggs....making sure to use halal mayo....if there is such a thing. And remember you can never go wrong with a big bowl of cut up fruit dressed very simply with perhaps just orange juice. Linda C...See Morebbstx
