Direct sowing cleome in area where poppies grow in spring
Comments (6)I also had cleome in my previous Zone 6 garden. I planted it once and it appeared for many years thereafter without effort on my part. Based upon both of our experiences in enjoying this self-seeder, I would suggest that you sprinkle the cleome seeds among the emerging poppy foliage in the early spring. According to the seed germination database attached, cleome seed wants light to germinate, so you don't need to cover it with soil. Thus, you don't need to disturb the emerging poppies in order to "plant" the cleome seeds. Let the spring rains wash the cleome seeds into the nooks and cranies of your garden soil and I think Mother Nature will trigger the cleome to sprout when the temperature is "just right". Comments (4)I can only speak about starting poppies. They are best direct sown. Start well before March. Now, or as soon your snow is less than 4" high, go out and throw the seed where you want poppies to grow. They don't mind freezing and they don't need to be covered by soil. When the day length and temperature are right, they will germinate. Next year shake the dried seed pods around wherever you want poppies and wait for them. Comments (3)I'm in zone 7, too, and I usually direct sow both larkspur and poppies in early spring. Poppies in particular resent transplanting, to it's best to direct sow these (not winter-sow them, which is actually sowing them in containers). If you sow several times, about a week apart, you should get a prolonged bloom time. These are both self-sowers, so direct sowing now should work, but I usually have more luck with these in the early spring. Diana Lynn...See MoreTime to sow Larkspur seeds if you have them!
Comments (19)Great time to remind people to sow larkspur...it's a beautiful spring bloomer. I have direct sown (actually broadcast the seeds)larkspur, cornflowers, poppy, cilantro, dill, and blue flax seeds. I didn't harvest seeds from my bells of Ireland, unfortunately. I will sow my sweet peas this week where I am able to cover them during periods of hard frosts. Purchased plants for winter/spring bloom for me are: lobelia, johnny-jump-ups, alyssum, dianthus (tall varieties), petunias, snapdragons, stock and nemesia. My anemone and ranunculus bulbs should come in this week and I will plant them immediately. Molly...See MoreUser
