Black and White and red all over....
Comments (5)Would not sweat the backsplash now either, and without seeing the plan or the style cabs, think that Subway tiles may look busy and detract from the granite (due to lots of grout lines)...large tiles or travertine might be better. Also where and how close to high abuse (stove back, sink) areas are the back splash areas For floors, dont dismiss natural wood colors, such as bamboo. My SIL did her kitchen in dark mahogany cabs (upper), stained some of the base ones a sage, put in granite, and a light wood bamboo floor with enough brownish veining tones in it to compliment the mahogany. The light floor makes the mahogany pop without feeling dark and her touches of color show well as a result. The bamboo flooring can hold up fine in a kitchen but perhaps not a high traffic with 4 kids. We have wood parquet (highly sealed) in our kitchen which gives a light maple glow with st steel counters and dark cherry cabs. That has worked well too and last 20 years. I like the wood as it is forgiving to stand on and work. And fewer things break if dropped. Good luck....See MoreII. What's black, white & black all over?
Comments (14)I think that the first one (black, white, red) is "contemporary" and they were going for a certain amount of post modernism, and keeping a restricted palette. It's hard to say what it looked like with furniture but I would say the furniture was also black white and red and maybe other primary color. I think it's kind of a Patrick Nagel Poster come to life. The second one, on the surface, sounds the same, but is really a lot different. I would call it a sort of "High Glamour Contemporary" more in a "disco" inspired kind of way. It's not postmodern although some of the elements have roots in post-modernism. I have an idea of what sort of person wants something like this. I had a friend who had a client who came home from the nail salon one day and wiggled her heavily tipped and manicured talons at him and said "I want my Dining Room to look like this". Personally I could deal with the first house on some level, because it's a relative "blank" except for the Memphis-y wallpaper and the bathrooms. I would be extremely uncomfortable in the house in this post. I do think the kitchen in this house is more successful than the one in the first house, which just looks sort of tired and non-committal with the grey instead of black....See MoreShe's done - backsplash, grout and ALL! Comments (30)Thanks everyone. I'm all smiley and giddy hearing your kind comments. It melts me heart. I'm glad to hear people like the backsplash tile. It is pretty bold. I was also THRILLED with how the stain on the island turned out. Interestingly, lots of people say the kitchen has a peaceful look and feel to it and that wasn't necessarily something I was aiming for but my kitchen mission statement did include "casual but sophisticated/elegant" which might boil down to "peaceful or tranquil". We feel very blessed to have been able to do such a large scale kitchen remodel and are thrilled with how everything turned out. It also means we won't be moving for the next 15+ years! I can't wait until the bar stools are in and I can start serving snacks to my kids there. We are borrowing one bar stool right now and it gets a lot of use. clarygrace and others - I'm glad to hear you think the colors are coordinate b/c I was in a quandary about that at one point. I can't wait to see your kitchen and island. We love the shape of ours but did it b/c it worked within our constraints. We didn't want to mess with the existing deck outside the bay windows and we couldn't push right much more either b/c of the powder room. And speaking of the powder room - here are pictures of that which was also part of this remodel: tea4all - the pantry is pretty small as far as walk-in pantries go. Finished dimensions are 5.5' long by 46'' wide. We weren't originally going to do a pantry but it made sense with the rest of the layout (it brought the oven closer to the rest of the kitchen) and I am really glad we did! It was actually framed larger and had to be redone b/c large aisles were more important to me than a few more inches in the pantry. The other detail I forgot to include - the grout color on the backsplash is Custom Grout Light Smoke and on the floor it is Lacrete Parchment (just in case someone really wants to know - ha!)...See MoreAlaska white granite is turning tan all over. Comments (22)@janeen88 Very interesting. Normally we would think of iron deposits creating orange spots in granite, but In doing some Google searching, I'm seeing a lot of references to iron oxide impurities causing yellowing of natural stone especially when exposed to "weathering" which in your case could mean moisture of any kind such as if you're using anything more than a dry rag for wiping up. Steam from cooking or from a dishwasher could even play a role. As for the tan, I found one reference to white and light colored dolomites turning tan due to several mineral impurities. Your granite probably doesn't contain dolomite, but if you wanted to pursue this lead, you could probably find a university geology lab that might do some microscopic examination of a sample of granite and be able to tell you what minerals it contains that could be turning those areas tan. Here's the quote, "Dolomites are fine- to coarse-grained rocks that, in the unweathered state, are generally gray to light colored. On weathering they may become buff or tan because of impurities that commonly consist of iron within or between the dolomite crystals or of small amounts of pyrite, siderite, or marcasite." From this source: Kansas Geological Survey, The University of Kansas Houzz contains several threads with various suggestions for fixes for the iron staining. Here's one for starters with this quote: "As for iron oxides (orange rust) appearing on slabs, Naval Jelly, which is a rust remover, might work. We've used it on granite that had something steel against it that had left rust that had penetrated the surface. It's worked every time. We haven't had the issue of rust spontaneously appearing on a granite, but Naval Jelly might work."
