New Carrier Infinity goes into "stupid mode" every day

Since our install last month, we notice that on most days, at some point the system decides to just start cooling, and even usually ramps up to stage 4 or 5, even when the settings say otherwise. Today for instance, while room temp was 74, system was set to cool-to 78 (just to keep it off for this test), it dutifully ran the fan-only for a couple of hours. Then, still at 74, I heard the fan ramp up, and sure enough, it's in stage2 cooling and has now been sitting there for almost an hour, blowing 52 degree air into a 74 degree room, while set to cool-to 78.

Is this crazy? My dealer says he's submitted this to Carrier but we've not heard back yet, and it sure seems like this is a problem.

Is this a Carrier Greenspeed condenser? Is the thermostat a Carrier Infinity controller? If yes has the dealer tried replacing it?

The controller may be trying to cool to dehumidify, but the usual limit is 3 degrees. Even if that were the case, it should stay in the lowest stage. Check the humidity level setting on the controller. If it is at maximum it might be trying to get the humidity below 40%

Having you tried measuring the temperature near the thermostat with an accurate thermometer. The thermostat may need to be calibrated.

If you haven't noticed yet, it's kind of a buyer's market out there. Are those reasonable equipment prices? I guess so. Honestly, if you're existing equipment isn't broken, the first money I'd spend would be on air sealing, insulation, and a programmable stat. All that cash on a high-SEER heat pump is wasted when the ducts are blowing the heat into the attic or wherever. If the vendor is savvy enough to do a blower door test, then he should be sizing your system based on ACCA Manual J. You didn't mention that. What we did, and I think it's money well spent, was to find someone independent to do the infiltration test and run the load calc.s. Then, if you have that and an idea of anything else you want to do while replacing the equipment (i.e. sealing ducts, adding a ?return? duct to the second floor), you can easily have multiple bidders price the HVAC work for you. FWIW, I did the sealing and insulation myself when we renovated. I suspect that your HVAC guy would likely sub out the insulation/other work. That may mean there's a markup in there you're paying for single-source convenience. Last thought, it isn't apples to apples, but we're running a 3.5-ton HP for 2200 sq ft in GA. That's w/ improved sealing and insulation that isn't perfect but is a lot better than what was in there originally.

Our 25HNA Carrier is on its THIRD compressor (first one failed, a second died this spring) and now we have an issue with the TXV valve. At this moment the tech is attempting to recover the valve by using some special substance that has worked "wonders" he says, to a pattern of problems with the original issue of failed compressors. He says that the refrigerant systems is meant to be sealed and that once it is cut to replace a compressor or TXV valve, it ramps up the possibility that contamination can enter the system. Between issues from faulty Bristol two-stage compressors, to those Copeland units which had a lubricant that clogged the system using the R410A refrigerant, and the openings/closings of sealed coolant lines, what does one expect? Once that happens, he says, it's IMPOSSIBLE to completely reverse that. I'm being penny wise/pound foolish as I'm paying up to $700 to attempt to cure or replace the valve (he is installing some kind of additive), but the alternative to the short term gamble, is DITCHING the unit (7 years old) and getting another $8,000 unit for a home we plan on leaving in the next two years. I'm investigating at this time whether it's possible to go for small claims ($5K cap in my state) at this stage, and perhaps the attorneys would rather settle than come to court. This kind of pattern of failure is amazing, my tech says, and I'm seeing this all over the HVAC forums here. Surprising that this hasn't yet been swept up and slathered all over the mainstream media, as it seems the big companies are trying to keep it swept under the rug.

Reading this thread has reaffirmed my decision to upsize the Greenspeed per Carrier's recommendation based on my cooling load. I could have went either way: 3 or 4-ton with my heat load. Too bad they don't make a 3.5 ton, it would have been the perfect size. Last year's polar vortex in NY Long Island really pushed me into the 4-ton. The way I figure the unit will only go into defrost mode below 8-10F. I also have 300sqft of window space, three huge doors and a fireplace. No matter how much my thermal envelope is tightened there will still be leakage in this 75 year-old home. My biggest disappointment so far with the 4-ton is it only reduces its speed to 50% vs 40% for the 3 and 5-ton units. The information across the Internet is just plain wrong on that one. We're charting in brand new territory still, so hope I've added somewhat to the pool of information. Otherwise this unit is *way* better than my wildest expectations. The comfortability factor is way better than my single-stage and well worth the additional cost. I'd go even as far as to say perfect. We had a huge heat snap for two days 65% humidity and temps into the upper eighties still at 80F past midnight. I only used $3.15 for the entire day vs. almost $11 for a similar temp period last year. I also credit my new Sunrise windows with lots of the improvement. At full load the system was using approximately 1150W. It only went up to 70% usage for a very brief period at night. More importantly I could easily maintain rock solid 45% humidity at 73F. Not enough data to really extrapolate much else. The system is so quiet my neighbors asked why I hadnÃ¢ÂÂt turned it on yet. :) The real test will be this winter though. Hi. Yes that noise is NOT NORMAL. I have a 4 ton Greenspeed. Do you have version 9 on that thermostat ? Mine did and propane Greenspeed furnace would go on when heat pump was suppose to reign. They changed my thermostat and this time with version 10 software which now seems to fix my problems. It's a science these Greenspeeds that even some Carrier Reps don't fully understand. Carrier is expecting too much from 3rd party tech. with this leading edge technology. Politely demand a local carrier Rep to talk with your installers. Tell Carrier it can only help with tech training on their proprietary Greenspeed technology. My issue right now is that the Celcius setting is not real CSA format for a thermostat. In celcius mode Carrier does not offer .5 increment settings (as of version 10) so I cannot get 71 F which is 21.5C. I have to change to Farenheith and when I go back to Celcius my original Celcius settings are now skewed. Besides these little bugs I like the system. it is quiet. starts to become noticeable at -15C and colder. I was surpised when the gas furnace was switched off and the heat pump took over at -23C for awhile. can't complain about saving $$$. my other beef is carrier did not allow firmware mods to accommodate an HRV unit other than their own with an added $300 NIM interface. they want a digital to analogue conversion for a simple thing called an HRV. They did it right with a humidifier hookup - using analogue terminals - why not an HRV for on or off depending if dehumidyfier is needed. Other than that I hope to enjoy saving $$$ on heating costs.

I read elsewhere that it's best to set the humidity all the way down; in this case, the Touch thermo setting goes down to 46%, yet when we look with Features it sometimes says it's currently down as low as 40%. Are you saying it should not be set to 46%?

You can set it down to low humidity, but the thermostat is going to cool to dehumidify. This means the temperature may go 3 degrees below the thermostat setting in order to achieve the set humidity level.

This is why some dealers don’t
want the clients to adjust the humidity control feature of their Infinity
thermostat. They play around with it until they mess it up and require a
service call.

If you want the humidity
level to remain low and maintain high efficiency, torturing your heat pump is
an inefficient way to do it. The proper and efficient method would be to
install an integrated HRV/ERV fresh air ventilation system.

Do you open your windows at night to let in the cool air? If you do you are allowing humid air to enter the house. The AC then is going to work hard to try to reduce the humidity. It may take more than a day to lower it. Keep the windows closed. If they are leaky see if you can make them tighter.

Humidity readings are not very precise. They could be off 3-4 percentage points. You can't rely on the setting and the readings. Use them as a guide.
