It def has to have something to do with the ph or nutrition of the soil. i was just looking this same thing up and finding no real answers yet. my plant is just like those pictured here... but when I got mine just recently they were well rooted cuttings and still kept in water. As soon as I planted them in soil the color began to leech. What I put them in was mostly a mixture perilite and coco coir. The coir is a cactus and succulent soil that does have some fetilizing agents (18-6-12)... high nitrogen. I bet thats it! I have also fed just a tiny bit with Superthrive vitamin sokution meant to help transplated plants not get too shocked... but that is just a 0.5-0-0. its mainly kelp & vit B. Anyway... I will continue to do sum more research to see what I come up with but I believe we are onto something with this nitro thing... good luck! Interested to see if anyone else comes up with anything. I mean I know mine is not a light issue also. Water I could see bc of placing my plant in a pot just recently but lighting has not been changed. i have a good south window and supplement with grow lights on cloudy days. Thanks for anything else anyone can figure out!

Re: the Philodendron selloum question: We have one at work that's been there for God knows how long that's probably 6 feet across and four feet tall (including the pot). I suspect that they actually get larger than that, even, if grown outside in a tropical climate, but that's probably the largest one I've seen personally. Philodendrons in general: I do have several (P. hederaceum, P. hederaceum micans, P. hederaceum 'Aureum,' P. panduraeforme, P. selloum, P. 'Silver Metal,' P. 'Autumn,' P. 'Moonlight,' P. 'Black Cardinal,' P. Red Emerald'), but I don't find them all equivalently praiseworthy. My favorites of those are: P. hederaceum micans (velvet philodendron) because it puts up with me (though the new leaves it's grown are quite a bit smaller than the leaves it had before) and because for reasons I can't put into words, I really like having it near my computer, to look at. It somehow rewards close scrutiny in a way that a lot of plants don't. P. hederaceum 'Aureum' (yellow heartleaf philodendron) because once it decided it was going to grow (which decision took several months), it grew like gangbusters. The new leaves are yellow-orange, the older leaves are yellow-green, it trails nicely, new leaves are big, and it doesn't ask all that much of me. P. 'Silver Metal' because it turns out to root a lot more easily, and grow a lot more vigorously, than I expected it would. The only down side I've discovered is that it's kind of brittle -- the one at work was slowly dismantling itself, somehow: I kept coming in and finding pieces of it on the table, in the pot, in other pots. I didn't mind, since I then got cuttings to take home that I didn't even have to work for, but it's not a desirable quality in a plant you want to keep. I'm looking into botanical antidepressants. P. 'Moonlight' because after a couple months of negotation and phone tag and burnt edges and aborted leaves and stuff, it finally came around and grew very well under a fluorescent light in my bathroom. (Some plants you have to reason with.) But it's turned out very well, very balanced growth, and we're currently in the process of negotiating a move to the living room. The big disappointment of the group: P. 'Autumn.' It's never grown well, it's never acted like it wanted to grow well, and all indications are that it is probably never going to grow well. No explanation, no note, no nothing: it just hates me, and it's hated me for nine months now. If it could speak, I suspect it would be saying, "I'm not going to *tell* you what's wrong: you should *know* what's wrong. I'll sleep on the couch again."

Barb...both happy and sad....Happy he is moving forward with his life. Knowing he will go far as long as he stays focused on his studies, and learns to quit being so wasteful. Sad because he is moving on and we will be seeing very little of him in the next 4 years or so. We havent made any new life adventures yet. House needs some TLC. I suppose first we will get used to having a home with just us and the critters and go from there. Chell I used to be a dog and cat groomer. I loved it too. But my employer was a deedeedee. Never had the money to pay me each week and always "owed" me. And she never gave me my tips either.Then at the end of the year she reported more earnings for me than what I had really made.Fortunitly I kept records and proved my case and won, so make sure you don't let the same happen to you. I have kept my clippers, blades and accessories and still will do a neighbors dog or two once in awhile to keep my skills up.....but don't miss the hair stuck in places I did'nt know existed....lol. So I don't visit as many of them, and put bookmarks on the ones I do haunt regularly so I don't have to try to read through that incredibly long list of all same-color links every day, still with no indication of whether or not they have new activity since ones' last visit. Asleep, saw it but forgot by the time I'd scrolled down. U know how forgetful old people can be. Oops! Yes, I've manipulated some of the pieces through/up the fence. Yep, on panic night, I'll be cutting pieces off & sticking in pots to make more over winter. The roots will be OK outside (here) & grow back again next year.
