Wandering Jew- All purple/pink now, no stripes?
Comments (5)Hi Toni, thanks for the response, but I don't think light is the problem. The plant is directly in an east/southeast facing window with no curtain. I have other WJ in the same window and they are fine- it is just this one that has the problem. The leaves aren't pale- they have a pretty good purple/pinkish color- and it's not spindly. It's just that the plant seems to have lost almost all of its green color, and you can't really see the stripes anymore. It's odd- I've heard of WJ losing their purple and being mostly green (and have had this happen myself) but never a plant that lost its green and was all purple. I can send a picture if that would help (not sure if I can post on this forum, I am a newbie, any advice would be appreciated). Thanks! Comments (8)Common names: I know Purple Heart as an outdoor flowering plant. As to the Plants in questions, group of Tradescantia, larger family of Commelinacae. I believe they include Tradescantia (common Wandering Jew, green tops, purple underneath); also comes in all green & green & white only (no purple). Then there's Setresea pallida: looks like a larger Wandering Jew, all purple (no green) sometimes fussy. Then there's Rhoeo (Moses in the Cradle or Boat), comes in green up top, purple below, also green & white w/ Pink highlights. (except Rhoeo) All of these root easily in water, make lovely hanging baskets as they like to trail when they get longer. Other than Rhoeo, they all take well to pinching to be kept full & lush. There's more varieties I'm sure, but these are the basics that I've seen around commonly in the last 30 yrs. since my college days (when I got to see what other folks wee growing)....See MorePurple Heart wandering jew losing its colour
Comments (1)What kind of light do they get? If it gets too much sun, the stripes will begin to run and the purple and green will bleed together. Eventually the plant will turn completely green. To avoid this, move fading Wandering Jew to a more shaded area. Once the new growth is purple, you can cut the green out. Hope this helps. It worked for me....See MoreWandering Jew Care
Comments (0)I have many cuttings of purple heart wandering jew that I recently planted from pot to ground, to be used as a ground cover. I planted the wandering jew apart from my other garden plants but wanted to keep a uniform look with the bark mulch edging. Will the mulch hamper the growth of the wandering jew in any way? It's been in the ground about a week now and looks lively. I'm just concerned because I want it to spread. Your advice will be greatly appreciated....See Moregobluedjm 9/18 CA
