The climate in New Zealand…would it be like Zone 8-10 or do you get ’cold’ weather in your Winters? I live in southern California and as you know, we dont get much ’rain’ let alone temperatures below 50* almost all year long. i visited Campbell Town Scotland once and that temperture remained cool and damp most of the year…(I was informed)…and though i always wanted to ’see’ Australia and New Zealand, i never got an invite so i don’t know the climate. a great encouragement to guys like us is to watch videos on Youtube about growing Food Forests!!!!…and those guys amazing success about all types of ideas!!!!!

We are also Zone 3, and our Bali, which we get from Bailey Nurseries in St. Paul, are grafted onto Mazzard Cherry rootstock, which is commonly listed as Zone 5. It is telling, I think, that I've never seen or heard of a plain old Mazzard Cherry growing as a tree in this area. And indeed I've heard reports of them dying over winter. I told them that I bought about a 100 trees 15 years ago from DNA. And that I would plant the grafted ones below the graft for zone 3, they thought it was a good idea. Konrad

Okay I dug it up and moved the whole smaller tree. I thought I would get dirt with the roots but it didn't work out so well. I got bare roots. I got a root sections about eighteen inches with a bunch of hairy little roots kind of like you would see if you scaled up a little root graft picture. I should have taken a picture sorry. I have some 1/2" dia roots cut. I put it in the arch of the sun as it goes threw my woods in the back of my vegtable garden. Itsnext to a maple tree but the sun will hit the fruit tree as it comes around. I mixed up some rooting fertilizer I got last year from the nursery. I mixed it with soil, rain water and some rotted sawdust. I mixed it in with rain water and my hand to get it into the air voids and filled the hole up like that till I got to the top. Then a blanket of rotted horse manure and leaves to shield the sun. This is what the top looks like in the one picture. Do you think I should top it to one small branch?

Brix/sugar content is a little over 12%, not bad for a wet year I think. From a leftover stainless steel piece after milling I made a better mixer, [welded/added in the center piece] to rip the cherries apart after thawing out in that container.
