In and around Portland, various growers sell tomato plants, with many heirloom kinds. Just about everyone sells Sungold because, even if all other tomatoes fail, Sungold will thrive. The box stores are a source as long as you select fresh plants rather than shopworn kinds that have dried out one or more times. We also have numerous small garden centers which feature heirloom tomatoes in spring. Call around as previously suggested. Another resource for good quality plants are local farmer's markets Don't get too anxious about planting, though. Many folks wait until June or later to set out transplants so that the tomatoes receive the consistent warmth they require. You might be interested in "Growing Your Own" from Oregon State University. HighlanderNorth, where are you located? I'll be right over to eat that ugly tomato for you! I'll save you from it! Seriously, that tomato sounds just right, and I would not have hesitated to eat it. The first slice would have been nekkid, the second salted, and the 3rd in a luscious BLT! Dang! I made myself hungry for a nice ripe warm tomato from the garden and all I have are greenies! (And that doesn't mean green when ripe.) **Betsy sternly points herself back to task at hand.** There is some variation in color on Cherokee Purple, largely due to where they are grown. It seems if they get more sun in a hotter area, they tend to be darker in color, or more "purple." I get variation between tomatoes in the same season, but seem to have more variation from season to season, just like we do with flavor. Southern CPs are generally darker than northern ones. (The same tends to hold true for other "black" and "purple" tomatoes. I've included a Google image search link below so you can see the variations in colors. Hi Linda, They are very tasty and to me taste the similar to CP so I am a bit baffled. It is a vigorous plant with lots of these little cherries all over it. I will try saving some seeds since I like it but I will go back to my old seed packet for the regular sized ones too. Hi Goodground, I got them from a regular brand from my local garden store. I have them put away in my freezer but I will dig them out and see which brand it is. I will grow the other year's seeds from a different company and save them because I like the big ones for sandwiches etc. Do Black Cherries taste like CPs? They are tasty so if that is what they are, I will grow them on purpose next time lol. I just googled Black Cherry and it does look like a "mini" Cherokee Purple and my tomatoes. I think you solved the mystery!
