TIP: How to take a close up or macro photo with a cell phone

It can be tricky trying to take a close up photo of a small insect or feature with a cell phone camera. Here is a trick I learned from my dentist.

Get a small dental magnifying mirror. You can get an inexpensive one at most pharmacies or value stores in the oral hygiene section. Position the mirror so that the buggy is reflected in the dental mirror. Try also to arrange yourself or the mirror at the best angle to illuminate the insect. You will have already gotten your phone camera set up, so just take a photo of the magnified image of the bug (as reflected in the dental mirror). If the bug is cooperative, you can ask him or her to hold a small LED light so it shines on him. Or put down the beer so that you have an extra hand or your mouth is free. Be patient, pre-focus on the insect, not the background. Hold still and click.
