Coffering the bedroom ceiling for a ceiling fan

We want to install a ceiling fan in our master bedroom, but the ceiling is just under 8' and I don't like ceiling-hugger fans. We are thinking of coffering the center of the ceiling to accomodate a 38" ceiling fan but are stuck on the style......a simple one level opening? Two levels? How wide should the opening be so the fan has freedom to spin and allow the air flow to cool the room? Thoughts appreciated!

Do you realize what the cost of this would be just to gain a ceiling fan?What is the age of the house and does it have trusses or joist and rafters?

How about a wall mounted fan? Consider fans from Matthews fans and Fanimation. There are a few more options. I have 8' ceilings and the huggers are wonderful and work very well. My huggers are from Modern fan. I saw that Matthews Fan just added a ceiling hugger that is also very appealing.

My MB ceiling is the same as yours and we've always called it a tray. There are double trays too. Our MB walls are painted BM Pittsfield Buff then we've got crown moulding. The flat part of the ceiling surrounding the tray is white and the angled part of the tray is also Pittsfield Buff. The tray itself is the next darker shade on the same color strip, BM Yorkshire Tan, if I'm remembering correctly. A decorator selected this combo. She said that painting the flat part of the tray a darker shade makes the ceiling feel higher.

I like to keep it simple. Adding crown molding and trim to the coffered area complicates things. Because then you have to figure out what parts should be what color, where to start color, where to end it. Whereas if you keep it simple and leave it as is, it's a lot easier to figure out. For example, paint the walls and ceiling the same color so you can leverage the natural shadowing that happens with try/coffered ceilings. The edges and details are naturally emphasized by light and shadow. No PITA edges to cut in with paint, no decisions about what color goes where.

Thanks, but I do not like the look of hugger fans. We are aware of the remodeling costs, I'm just looking for suggestions for the width of the opening to accomodate a 38" fan. The contractor has already indicated it is totally possible with the attic space available.
