Start Early or Late Season Tomato

I know a lot of folks like to brag about the first tomato of the season. So we race against the clock to start the first and biggest spring tomato plant. But from my past experience, it seems early starting tomato may not be a great idea for some of the tomato.

With the very early start, the plants can be large. After the hot summer, the plants can be exhausted. Then the yield is not good after the summer. This is particularly true for the large plants, like most of the cherry plants.

I know this depends on the varieties and local climate. In my area, I only start early the tomatoes who are known to grow slowly, or have small mature sizes. I leave the large ones later. I also try to stagger the harvest time. So I can still get some late season fruit burst.
