I'm in S. Florida and have one in the ground under some crotons. We had two nights below 30 degrees at the beginning of this year, and the mona lavender did great. Last month, the summer heat had made it so ratty looking that I literlly mowed it to 4 inches high. Now, it's coming back great. Hope this helps.

Just tip pinch occasionally to control size. In my experience cutting it back too hard isn't good for it, not as tolerant of a hard prune as much as Plectranthus zuluensis or ecklonii are.

one September I picked up 3 of these that were huge and in full bloom in 6" pots at a garden center for $1 each!!! She was getting rid of stuff and I was there at the right time. THey were quite root bound, so I potted them up in bigger containers and enjoyed the show for a while. I overwintered them in a 50 degree basement under flourescent lights with other tropicals. They did fine. But the next year I couldn't get them to bloom. I think the season was too short or I did something wrong. I dumped them. I tried in the ground and in a pot. The one in the ground got huge. I don't remember the pot.

I also had two Plectranthus 'Mona Lavender' come back. One has flowers identical to the ones in my potted plant. The other has flowers that are about twice as long and are more narrow tubular shaped. Otherwise the plants appear identical. Several years ago, I was given a plant id'd as P. 'Purple Haze (or Hays), but it appeared to be 'Mona Lavender'. Now I am wondering if there really is such a variety and I am just now noticing the difference in the flowers. These two survivors were growing in front of a fig tree and partially under a crepe myrtle, so the tree roots keep the soil really dry in the winter. (I water frequently but only during warm weather.)
