hanzrobo thanks for responding, you know I think I'm coming out of denial because I too noticed the spots on mine a few weeks ago and it was actually this morning my wife asked me , Hey whats up with your sunburst aeonium it has black spots on it? I thought to myself, emmm... I was wondering the same thing. I guess my next step might be to pull him up and out of the pot and check under the hood to see whats happening down there. I'll let you know what the results were. until then I'll lay of the water because I know it wasnt a lack of it.

Dream, definitely. The staining and slowing of these smaller Aeonium are minimal compared to the ugly "Woe is me!" closing up of larger Aeonium rosettes. Truly pitiful for about 5 months out of the year, looking like they are dying. There has got to be a decent setting for these in summer. I have tried for years and so far, no success. My 'Suncup,' 'Sunburst,' 'Pinwheel,' and even the 'Kiwi' really hated this summer. The real oddity is that I have some more Kiwi cuttings in another pot, and they are lovely. No idea why. Next year, I may attempt growing these indoors under lights in air conditioning, Lol.

Hi there, It appears that there are some issues in regard to how you treat the plant. First, I would say that your plant is struggling with the current mix. It would be great if you could tell which type of succulent soil mix you are currently using. If you are referring to the packaged succulent soil mix, such growing medium usually hold too much water for succulents to survive in general. Those black spots appear to be the 'too much water-stored' indicator, I'm afraid. I would suggest removing those spotted leaves to prevent the healthy parts of the plant from infection. They should come off easily. Please check the root system and cut those dead and rotted and let it callous over. In my experience, the mix that I plant my succulents contains scoria, perlite, and a little proportion of akadama, all of which are inorganic materials, i.e. gritty mix. You can have some searches in this forum with many variations in terms of the mix's components. Second it is the watering habit. Spraying does harm succulents in a great degree, which certainly causes rots to happen. The widespread of black spots is the solid evidence. Succulents in general should be watered only when the growing medium is completely dry and in the pot not on the plant. Water should run thoroughly and out the pot's drainage hole. The pot must have a drainage hole !!! P/s: Sorry for being nosy but I guess that you are from and are living in Vietnam?

Hi, Ellie. Whether or not the symptoms are fungal in nature, it's a pretty good bet that they're at least indirectly related to the limitations/stress imposed by over-watering. A plant's natural defenses are a byproduct of it's metabolic rate. Since over-watering causes a limited oxygen supply, which in turn causes depressed root function and a 'back-slid' plant, we should have either an appropriate medium/soil in place (one that allows us to water to beyond the point of soil saturation w/o having to worry the soil will remain waterlogged for extended periods and wreak havoc on the root system), or work-arounds that effectively trump the soil's ability to hold excess water ..... more about that if you have interest. An appropriate medium makes a very distinct difference in our ability to provide the cultural conditions that allow the plant to realize as much of the genetic potential given the plant by Mother Nature as possible. We can be sure she will always side with any flaws hidden in our habits. The dots look very much like caterpillar excrement - not a diagnosis - just an observation. Check to see if the dots are stuck to the plant but come off reasonably clean if rubbed with a toothpick, or, if you crush the dots with a toothpick, is there a viscous liquid that oozes our from under the 'shell'? If 'yes' to either, suspect a scale infestation to be causal. If scraped with a toothpick, does it leave a dark powdery residue on the leaf? If yes, possibly a fungal or fungal rust issue. Al
