Sunflower seedlings attacked?

I'm on my third sowing of Sunflower seeds and I'm pretty sure the squirrels are pulling them out. It's annoying since they don't seem to be interested in eating them at all. They break off the tops and leave them lying there or pull them out entirely and leave them there. I've covered them with hardware cloth while they are germinating but once they start growing I have to remove it. I'm thinking of putting a cage next to them this time and maybe if we catch and release them a couple of times, they will associate that area with that scare?

Anyone have any success in keeping their sunflowers growing without critter damage?
