Can I change antique brass and ORB to shiny brass?

Whenever I try to google this, all I get are ways to do the opposite i.e., change shiny brass to antique or ORB.

Anyone found a way to get shiny? If I use brass polish on a factory antique finish, will it turn shiny or will I risk ruining it?

As far as I know of, there isn't a way Daisy. Is there a way you can try brass polish on the factory antique finish in a spot that won't show?
Is the antique brass you are speaking of, real brass?

Maybe you would be satisfied with the look of gold spray paint or faux brass?

I would have put the lamps in my storage room (spare bedroom filled with 4 book cases and three 4-drawer putty cabinets) for extra lighting if they were very outdated. I guess I want my home to look nice as I am fixing it up. I like them too much to part with them and keep hoping one day to have a bigger place to have one more room to decorate. I still love the lamps but wish I had white lamps for my guest/exercise room but since these are still nice( bought them last year.... think September 2007), I will make do. SInce I bought the white wicker dresser in that room, I guess I was hoping to make it more white. Should I keep the lamps shades or get white ones? The cream shades really do go well with the brass lamp. I already spent so much on my new Durham Solid Wood Sand White finish bedroom set and now my new air conditioner/heating/compressor unit since my old one just died on me and caused a flood in my home two weeks ago. It was so expensive. I had planned to use the money for hardwood floors but now I can't do that for another year.

i will say that in general shiny brass is out, but stroll through a fer design mags and look closely...you'll see it's still in use! my powder room fittings are all shiny brass since that went best with the onyx and the victorian toilet. yes even the light fixture is shiny brass, painted that color from shiny silver :oP it looks fab with the venetian plaster that being said...i wouldn't want it all over the house...but i also wouldn't want any one finish all through the house since i like finish to be specific to the decor. if it were my place...i wouldn't fuss with it now if its all in good condition. thats the sort of cosmetic thing that most home owners can easily change theirselfs. if the house is in otherwise great shape...i'd leave it be. light fixtures are such an individual thing...if you replace them wiuth something that you like...they might hate it, no matter what the finish. i've staged many homes and had quick sales afterwards...and didn't change fittings in any of them. focus on the bigger things like paint and window coverings instead!

live wire oak- Like happyafwife, in our area, ORB hasn't faded. It is used more often than not in new construction in the most upscale neighborhoods. That is why we felt 'safe' using it. I love the look of stained woodwork, too. But my old woodwork wasn't stained - it was a medium brown painted/glazed finish from the mid-1960's. After ~45 years and three owners, it looked terrible and needed to have something done. To strip and stain it all would have been cost prohibitive. So we opted to paint everything (cabinets, doors, baseboards, etc)a soft white. It makes the house look so much lighter and larger - I can't believe that too many potential buyers will be turned off by it.

Ugh -- shiny brass hinges on new doors

I'm doing the painting, actually. Maybe I can paint the doors while we wait for the new hinges to come in. I asked about painting the current hinges, but the contractor cautioned against it. He said hinges have oil in them which would have to be soaked out before painting -- not best for the hinge. And the paint would eventually chip from all the movement and stresses. Better to spend the $ to replace the hinges. Thanks all for your input. We were hoping to wrap this project up in the next week, and the hinge situation will set us back some, but that's home remodeling! My family's at the breaking point, but I'll be doing my best Julie Andrews imitation to cheer them along.

Thanks for the responses. I could do a test in the future, right now the fixtures are in storage. Our contractor grossly under estimated our light fixture budget. All fixtures are supposed to be replaced (insurance) but there is no way we can do that on his budget, so I am trying to figure out how to save some of them and still have them work with the new colour-scheme, etc. I'm not even sure if they can be salvaged as water was pouring through them.

I know he is required to eat the cost if he underestimated, but he has been really wonderful so far (fingers x'd) in trying to get us what we want within our budget (while still making money himself, of course). I'd rather be creative where I can rather than just insisting he take a hit on it.

Graywings, thanks for the links. I have spray painted fixtures in less public rooms, but this would be in our kitchen and dining room, so I don't think I'd be happy with that option. I may just have to spend the summer searching for deals.

Check the wiring and paint them for now ... and when the budget allows, replace them.

Have you looked into have them replated in shiny brass? Actually they may know how to bring the shine back without replating them.
