Window Woes somethings wrong with the way window came in or am I
Comments (7)Angie, Thank you so much for looking that up for me! Its good to know its not just me. The trimline company rep said the install looked pretty good A windowrama tech is coming out to check the hooks and if it was made wrong then a trimline tech will be sent out - but trimline doesn't make the trim it seems and the windowrama salesman is claiming he never told me it would look like the samples on display - which he did when I asked and even if he didn't shouldn't the sales staff let the customers know they are getting something different from the display model? I am getting really frustrated now!...See MoreMarvin Integrity and Pella for new build
Comments (44)Here's my problem with Pella: I am an architect, and my office specializes in higher-end residential work, so we do specify a lot of windows. In my area, Pella's marketing is aggressive to the point of being obnoxious, and I can't help but wonder "if the product compares well to Marvin or Integrity, why not just let that speak for itself?" It's nearly impossible to get an apples-to-apples comparison of price between any brands, but another thing I've noticed is that Pella's number will look lower--at first. But you have to be extremely scrupulous to make sure they are pricing what you want. By the time you've discovered that Pella omitted something that any other vendor would consider standard (say, screens for your windows,) the price has crept back up to be just as much as the better window. I often feel pressured to consider Pella, probably because there are Pella salespeople literally chasing after me, my builders and even my clients. In my experience, none of the Pella sales people has a fraction of the knowledge that other window dealers have (Marvin/Andersen/Jeld-Wen.) The company appears to spend a ton of money wooing architects, designers, and builders, and that just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. For something as important as windows, I wouldn't take the risk. Also: your builder should absolutely weigh in. Good luck to you....See MoreHorrible Smell from Marvin Integrity Windows Installed 1 month ago
Comments (121)I will cut one apart this Sunday or Monday. I seriously doubt Marvin will do anything still. The only way to identify the VOC is to do chemical analysis. I will post pictures of the inside of the frame and we can see if it is worth paying for a lab. I pulled the windows out of my house and rigged in the old ones because of the obvious health concern of 24/7 exposure....See MoreHas anyone ordered Andersen from HD for new build, install by builder?
Comments (11)Very simply, as Beth was alluding to, you are likely comparing apples to oranges. The quote from your builder has a markup on it after the supplier price, which is not likely (his wholesale cost) to be more than you would pay walking in to home depot. You can discuss what a fair markup is, what's included, etc. It may all be moot though as I doubt this is as simple as taking home depot's bid to your builder and saying "here you go", order them from here instead and give me a $6k credit. I understand that you have an allowance, however his allowance figures are likely based on the prices that he's quoting with his markup. Have you spoken to him about your concerns about his window pricing? Have you discussed his willingness to allow you to source the windows, and the ramifications that would have on your pricing? I'm sure that there are possibilities here, however the savings will likely be a lot less than you are thinking and generally not worth the hassle or exposure that you take on if you source the windows... wrong size or option comes? Your problem. Window defect or warranty issue? Your problem... and so on....See MoreRelated Professionals
