Tin ceiling on low ceiling in dining room?

Quick background, we are almost 8 years into an expected 15 year renovation of an 1810 cape. We finally pulled the ancient drop ceiling down out of the dining room and are now left with the probable original ceiling (in very poor condition) with the strapping from the drop tiles. We expected to attach wallboard to the strapping for a new ceiling but now I'm thinking about tin.

The ceiling is very low, in modern terms, just over 7', maybe 7'4". The room isn't the brightest but we're hoping to rectify that when we rebuild the front wall this summer by adding 3 windows in place of the two small ones that are there now. I'm thinking the tin ceiling might help by reflecting light, especially at night.

Any input on tin on a low ceiling? I've only seen on higher ceilings and am not sure of the final look. I know it's not truly correct to the period but I like the look of a house that developed over time.

Tin requires furring strips and would lower the ceiling even more.

Consider using "Anaglypta" wallpaper over thin drywall for the tin look without the added hassle.

Depending on the dimensions of the room, a smaller pattern would make the room look a bit larger. Also, you can choose a crown molding that doesn't take up precious wall space. For instance, we have one that is only 2" deep. If you choose a ceiling pattern that lays more flat, such as our pattern #200 (see below) it will give you that look you want without crowding the air space. Alternatively, you can just add a pressed metal medallion to the room's light fixture or border the ceiling with a cornice only without doing the whole ceiling. Paint it white to reflect more light, but you can also clear coat these to keep the natural tin look. See more of our products at wfnorman.com.

rdsso I have the same armstrong tiles in my kitchen! It was difficult to put up (arms overhead a lot). We found that the edges were very delicate and anyplace there is a ding it is very noticeable. The ceilling tiles also were difficult to keep level so the ceiling looks a little wavy as if we are hiding a bad ceiling. If I had to do it over again I would opt for the larger plastic panels.

Smaller patterns will make the ceiling seem higher. There is one like 12" squares, IIRC there is another like 6" squares. (many larger patterns are 24" grid) 12 would probably feel right for a average ceiling ht. Casey

Hi Pablo! I think it might work, as wdccruise said above, there are a few rules that come in handy, but mainly, I belive personal decor can bend all the rules. Is there anyone who can hold the fixture while the other one looks at it? Sometimes getting a general idea of the outcome is the best way to decide! Also, I'd loose the round rug, as your floors are really nice, and the ug seems a bit small and constricting. It's making the whole space look smaller than it really is! Good luck!! :) Marie
