Since you found them . I would guess they are a wild species or a volunteer seedling . Could be wild goose plum or Prunus Americana . I am familiar with Chickasaw or sand plum . I have my eye on a wild thicket that may be wild goose or Americana . Waiting for them to get ripe .

Jerry -- Thanks a ton. I just made jam out of them today. Since they are very pretty and tasty, I'm also trying to root a cutting, but we'll see how that goes.

The wild ones around here send up suckers from surface roots . They form thickets .Grandma used to make jam and jelly from hers . I thought hers were Americana but recently discover they were Chickasaw . Here is photo of some leaves .

Chickasaw on the left and Ameraucana or maybe wild goose on right . Small round pit . Chickasaw has a longer pit . The one on the right has a rough finish like rugosa rose and the left one is slick like peach leaves .

Oh wow. That's great. I'll try to get back out there and bring a leaf sample home to compare to yours. The tree I found is actually in a state park, but way off any trails. It's kind of odd because I think someone might have intentionally planted a small orchard there many years ago. There are two huge (20+ ft) pecan trees (small pecans - see below) plus the plum and several trees that I think might be almond, or a stone fruit that is no longer producing.
