Updating Master Bath - Need help and suggestions
Comments (4)When we remodeled our guest bath last spring, I was all into the counter cabinets. But after seeing the interiors of a few, I don't think they provide enough storage for the amount of counter space and budget they hog. I'd limit drawers--because of the drawer box construction and the drawer glides, there's not much space in them. You might consider an appliance garage instead of drawers. However, I mocked it up with boxes and found I couldn't even comfortably move my hairdryer in and out of the garage. Or use an open shelf cabinet if you're willing to store toiletries in decorative containers. Initially I worked with our custom kitchen designer, and he designed a 12" deep recessed cabinet that went 4" into the wall. It was less intrusive on the counter, and I had planned on using a mirrored front to the cabinet to minimize the bulk. I'll attach a photo from Houzz. You can increase vanity storage by adding a drawer at the bottom of the sink cabinets. They're not extremely deep but they can hold a layer of towels or TP. Since you've had stained wood for two decades, I'd do painted cabinets this time. Have you looked on Houzz for inspiration pics? Comments (12)As Karen drew it out, I think the best layout is putting a shower on the other gable end. It sounds like you were proposing to just change the tub to a shower, remove the vanity next to the current shower/tub and replace the other vanity. I plugged your dimensions into the NKBA planning tool and it looks like you really can't have a wider vanity because you'll create a pinch point at the gable alcove. This is a 3' vanity and you'll see there's less than 2 feet to get back to the window area. I would guess that if you're planning to go to the expense of demoing the tub/shower, tiling a large shower and installing a glass surround, moving the shower drain to the side of the bathroom where a sink currently is is probably a small percentage of the overall project budget. It's definitely worth getting estimates for both plans. Here's another drawing, but in 3d that shows a shower where your vanity is. There's room for a bench under the window and it's far enough away from the main showerhead that you could probably hang your towel in there and not get wet. You could add a handy handshower on a slide bar within arms reach of the bench. In this configuration you'd have at 5-6 linear feet of cabinets, so you could do all vanity or a 4' vanity and a 2' linen cupboard with hamper across from the toilet maybe. Anyway. I think this would be a great master bathroom:...See MoreLake House Master Bath configurations
Comments (16)Much of this is personal preference. I’ve owned 4 homes in my adult life(one we built) with various master bath layouts. For me personally I prefer the toilet in it’s own room with a door, ie a water closet. If at all possible, a window in the water closet is a bonus. For the closet, I prefer it being accessed from the bathroom, I don’t like having to go get clothes and carry into the bathroom to get showered and dressed. I also don’t like the additional door on a wall, one more spot I can’t put furniture or artwork. As my husband and I frequently have different schedules, one of us would be disturbing the other to go in and out of the closet then the bathroom....See Moremaster bath remodel/re-do help please!
Comments (3)I think your clearances are way too tight, if your measurements are accurate. Not enough room between vanity, toilet, tub (esp if medical issue results in reduced mobility - you'll need more room to maneuver). How big a tub and shower do you need? You don't want to steal space from the WIC, but are there other adjoining rooms you could steal from? A minor note - I wouldn't plan for a towel bar on the wall with a pocket door - no studs to attach it to and my luck with drywall anchors is not good - ymmv....See Moremarthaelena
