Help, can I save this cherry tree?
Comments (3)How big were they at transplant? My first thought was the trunk bounced off some part of a truck or trailer and it just took awhile for the wound to show although the early fall color was a sign of stress. It does seem the mulch mount is hiding the root flare. Maybe that hurt. I had two silver maples go rotting from the base because the previous owner piled his clippings on them. Far as what to do....Man, I hate to cut down a healthy tree but I understand your desire for symmetry. How about in the fall plant whatever as a replacement then if it still bothers you by next spring or fall buy another of the replacement. BTW, and nothing against the fellas on here, but I would not trust the professionals. I see repeated lazy short cuts exposed by the Tree Forum pros and suspect the desire for cheap labor gets substandard help out to plant many trees....See Morecan (and should) this cherry tree be saved?
Comments (5)i have it on ONE crabapple .. and was told it is fireblight.. others poo poo'd that diagnosis ... whatever it is.. i agree its fungal .... crabapple.. cherry .. interchange either word below ... but it doesn't bother the other 15 crabs on the property ... this one being planted when the house was built in 85 .. the others put in by me in 2000 or so ... i sought disease resistant varieties ... the tree is nearly naked by this time of year.. and just bounces back every spring... i ignore it.. but one year will be done with it ... with two kids under 10 .. i am not interested in any chemical solutions .... if i really need another crab.. i will replace it with a disease resistant variety ... or better yet.. i will find something better than a crab or a cherry in your situation ... frankly .. there is nothing short of chemical warfare to fix this problem ... spraying 2 .. 3 ..4 times per year... making the tree live longer.. and you live shorter by your exposure to the spray ... in my world ... warped as it is. .. ignore it.. or get rid of it .... a brazen application of a chainsaw.. at or about ground level and some stump killer... dig a new hole a few feet from it.. and insert something that will make your toes curl for years to come.. without the chemicals.. is the best solution ... good luck ken...See MoreMy Husband pruned my fig tree wrong. Comments (11)th102 now is not the ideal time to prune your tree. Having said that. It will still leaf out and produce fruit if you prune it now. The longer you wait the more sap will be flowing thought the tree and the tree will lose more of its energy due to losing more sap. Keep in mind that pruning while the tree is no longer dormant will be a shock to the tree. Thus it will likely appear to stop the active growing process for 1-3 weeks. Your fruiting and ripening cycle this season will also likely be delayed/slowed by roughly the same amount of time....See MoreCan my Japanese Maple be saved
Comments (20)I live in South Africa, with a temperature of between 61 - 93 Fahrenheit, or between 16 - 33 Celsius for summer. For winter 28 - 72 Fahrenheit, or between -2 - 22 Celsius. This is the second time that I've lost a Japanese Maple the first lack of light or to much water. This time around I planted in a spot that received sun between 11 and 3 o'clock and rest of the day shaded. It began to loose its leaves showing the typical water droplet on leaves burns that has been described on the forums. I addressed the watering from the sprinklers. Later it actively created new leaves, whereas other leaves were scorched basically green/brownish. As discussed before the tree was most-likely under extreme stress and needed saving. Unfortunately I best thought to replant the tree since it was not located in a pot. So I left it in my room with plenty of light then went away a few days. I left instructions for it to be watered twice a week if the soil is dry. Now I came back last night. I found no new sprouting leaves and the trunk is black with some green spots (original bark I presume). I was told the tree was covered with a white pest of some kind, and was thus cleaned with soap water. First question: Is the tree dead? Second: any general suggestions regarding the climate. Since the general solutions posted relates to 1)ensuring that the cultivar can cope with the climate and 2) planting it in positions that gets morning or later afternoon sun, thus filtered sun during noon. The Idea of the cultivar is lovely, I'd like to have some of those trees in the back yard. Provided I can get it growing....See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
