So far, we haven't received any rain due to Dennis. We have a 30% chance today and a 40% tomorrow. I am keeping my fingers crossed. I tilled and hilled my late corn a couple of days ago and when I went out today, noticed a red and black spotted beetle eating the dickens out of it, so sprayed with sevin. It needs watering again, but it will have to wait its turn. DH is out mowing some more regrowth weeds today. I finally tackled the blackberry patch. There were weeds 8 feet tall and it all had to be done one weed at a time pretty much. Of course, I now look like a cat attacked me. I should have put on a long-sleeve shirt. What a relief to get that done. Ladybug, glad you have family to help out. You may want to invest in some of those wonderful Sunset books on wiring and plumbing. I have taught myself how to do lots of stuff with those two books. I rewired the bathroom and am currently trying to figure how to get power to an outside water fountain in the flower garden. Hope everyone is enjoying farmlife............... gld

In search of seeds for either of these coleus. My list is not updated, so if you have these seeds, please let me know and I'll look at your list and see what we can work out. Thanks Angela

Welcome to the wonderful world of no-spray roses in high humidity and heat of The South. I garden in eastern NC in these unfavorible conditions. Here are my favorites: Barrone Henriette de Snoy, lt pink tea Mrs. B. R. Cant, pink blend tea Prairie Sunrise, apricot Buck rose Quietness, lt pink Buck rose Honeysweet, orange pink Buck rose Chrysler Imperial, red hybrid tea Naga Belle, pink hybrid tea from India New this year: Mme. Berkeley, tea, small apricot blooms Krishna's Peach, tea from India, puny w/pale flowers Clementina Carboneri, orange pink tea, lovely Buxom Beauty, deep pink hybrid tea, large blooms don't last Milestone, or/red hybrid tea/tends to BS Perhaps these will improve with age. Do not like General Galleni's small odd shaped blooms nor Mrs. Dudley Cross which does not bloom much. Think she prefers less humidity. Am putting in more Buck roses next year and the red climber, Dublin Bay. I order "own root" roses from Roses Unlimited in Laurens, S.C. Roses are in one gallon pots. They are always large and healthy and can be planted directly in the garden without coddling. Have never had a complaint with them. Pat and Bill are very reliable and stand behind their roses.

First of all, I strongly suggest that you visit the Alabama Forum and get to know some of the good folks in there. You'll need to prepare yourself for the huge differences you'll discover about living in the deep South. Don't worry, once you get used to the fire ants and sand gnats, you'll love it! To answer your questions, organic gardening will be no more difficult for you in that location than anywhere else. Be sure to make a call or visit to your local extension office after you get settled (or as soon as you unpack). And yes, you will be planting very different types of plants...as well as leaving behind some of the things you are used to. As I used to say to a number of my clients when I lived in SC, "you ain't in Ohio anymore!" It seemed like most of Ohio had moved to coastal SC, lol. I'll look for you in the Alabama Forum. You'll soon be made to feel at home. You might even discover some new neighbors. Here is a link that might be useful: C'mon...let's visit the Alabama Forum!
