Hello Everyone :-)/question
Comments (15)Hi Susan, there was so much discussion last summer on how much water to give to cuttings, or not. I found out by my own problems, it has to do with how warm it is in your area, to how much you water.. I just planted a mystery cutting from Maui Gardens. Now we hit 80's now in 60's.. so did not want it wet, don't have any cuttings lost mine in our freeze, so want this to make it. I took the soil, cactus and mostly perlite. I put it first in the 5 gallon container, tall cutting. I lighly dampened the soil mixture, worked it, too wet, add more mix.. Until just was damp and stuck to your hand.. then as Bill said, made an opening in the center, filled it full of dry perlite and put my cutting into that, little more lighly dampened soil on top.. and put it in the corner.. done. I am not going to water it until I see leaves, per what I was told, will spray the plant with a bottle of water, ocassionally. Now if it got in the 90's, well a little drink not to dry out. Plant holds water inside..wait until it leafs out, then is a plant with roots. Then as Bill says, let the leaves grow 6 to 8" before you start feeding half amt and water like a regular plant that has roots. thats what I am doing, others may disagree. Comments (10)I agree with those who say that the window over the garage is small for the size of the wall that it is on but it may be a problem to change it without adversely affect in the rooms above the garage. If possible I would go for more windows. Rather than add shutters to the side for their strictly decorative value, you may want to consider what they call "Bahama" shutters as they would allow in indirect sunlight but also keep the window itself in the shade. If the room over the garage is seldom use, you may want to consider putting up some kind of a decorative awning to really block the light. The current window is centered over the garage door but not under the eaves, if you add more window across the front, I think it would look less off center under the eaves as well.... The other change you may want to make is the garage door, they now have many decorative versions including those with windows which add a lot of visual detail; however, I don't recommend windows on the garage unless you put up something so that people can't see in and see your cars and tools....See MoreNeed help for a ficus lyrata!
Comments (5)All the foliage symptoms you describe - yellowing leaves, drooping, browning, dropping - are caused by the roots not being happy. They need oxygen as much as moisture, but in a closed pot the bottom layer becomes saturated and anaerobic when you water, and roots in that zone die back. Then as the soil dries the plant puts its energy into regrowing those roots, only to die back again at the next watering. Also in a closed pot any excess or unused minerals and salts from fertilisers and water will build up, with nowhere to be flushed out. This can cause imbalances and toxiticies and interfere with the roots ability to absorb water by exerting an osmotic pull the other way. You may be able to reduce these negative effects by not watering until the soil at the bottom of the pot dries (as judged by inserting a wooden chop stick or skewer, like checking a cake), watering very sparingly when you do, and using mineral-free water like rainwater or distilled water to reduce the mineral/salt buildup. Doing all that may keep it alive for longer but it's not going to be thriving, and FLF's with all their big leaves don't look good if they're not thriving. Plus you'll get sick of worrying about it - takes the fun out of it!...See MoreHello everyone, Need help identifying this beautiful flower.
