NXR range hood

We need a range hood in house #1 so I ordered the NXR 36" from Costco today. Anyone have it? We have a Kobe in house #2 (over a Wolf) as it was quite literally the ONLY hood that would fit the venting location we had. On the Costco website photos the NXR controls look identical to our older Kobe, maybe Kobe makes it. It's going over a 40 yr old Tappan range (which I can't bear to part with yet) so it doesn't have to be amazing. Mainly I'm curious and Costco has such a wonderful return policy. Eventually we will get another range (NOT a Wolf) so at worst the NXR will be a functional placeholder for a future hood but wouldn't it be great to find a hidden gem! The price is certainly right.

Love to hear if anyone has it already, or, if anyone is interested I'll review when it's up and running.

I don't have it installed yet, but yes, it is a rebadged Kobe. The installation manual is exactly the same as the older Kobe's but with NXR printed on it instead. Not sure if others will chime in who have it - I couldn't find any reviews when I was looking - but I ended up taking the chance on it since it was a Kobe (which gets good reviews here) and had Costco's excellent customer service/return policy behind it. There's also a previous post about removing the NXR badge with a hair dryer and dental floss, if you're interested.

I'd be happy with another (Kobe); it was my first range hood so I have no comparison but did a ton of research before getting it. However, we also had no other choice due to the venting situation. It doesn't get heavy use as it's in a second home so I can't speak to the longevity. The Kobe controls still annoy me, a downside for the NXR but hardly a dealbreaker. Otherwise the NXR is different from my Kobe - different blower type, higher CFM, different shape - which is appealing. I'm interested in seeing which type I like better without having to sink $$$$ into something I'm stuck with. Love Costco.

When is yours going in? Hoping ours will be within the month. Guess i need to do another search here; didn't find any mention of the NXR.

I think that in a competitive environment, one gets what he pays for, or a bit less. Competitiveness includes an assumption of wide dissemination of relevant facts -- not always true of residential kitchen renovation products. In such cases, time and effort are required to find needed facts, or at worst, gather informed opinions. If Chinese kitchens are spec'd to a higher standard, then they may get a higher standard. However, what matters to a kitchen's productivity versus what matters to a residential kitchen built partially for show (or at least decent aesthetics) can vary. A commercial kitchen that is heavily used in an environment where absolute cleanliness is not considered important, can use lower cost but just as strong metals as what we might choose for perpetual shininess in our own kitchens. Whether lower gauge (thicker) metals are called for depends on what physical hazards the sheet metal parts have to resist. Put yourself in the shoes of a Chinese head cook in a Beijing hotel restaurant. He has a tile lined kitchen and a stove that may be burning coal, or gas, with at least 100k BTU available from each of several ports/burners. Multiple cooks are moving about. Apprentices are washing metal cookware in metal or stone sinks. Imagine what level of noise is present. Would the cook care if there was a rattle due to imperfectly fitted baffles? It is best to decide what one's own requirements are, and then evaluate the candidate solutions for those requirements against how well they appear to meet them. kas

Umm, it does sound a little underpowered for the NXR. I believe the NXR burners are about 15 k BTU/hr? Conventional wisdom would say you want closer to 600 cfm (although if you are not big cookers, less may be okay). I would tell you to post over on Appliances, but I am confident they will tell you MORE cfm.

Your kitchen is 45" wide? Is that 45" plus the base cabinets or 45" including the cabinets (i.e., a kitchen in hallway)? If the latter, how on earth did you ever get an NXR into that space? Anyway, what you can get away with and what would be "best" for range hoods are very different questions. Any choice you make is necessarily a collection of tradeoffs. My NXR sits under a 12 year-old 22" deep, 5" tall, twin-fan, two speed flat bottomed Zephy Cylcone vent-hood. It is what I could fit under my cabinets in my old-house kitchen. It does a good job of collecting and separating out greasy effluent and does a pretty good job with steam from pots on the range. For smoke, it is not great but is certainly adequate for almost all the cooking I do. I do a lot of ordinary frying, sauteing, steaming, boiling, and pressure cooking on the stove top and a lot of baking and roasting. I rarely use the broiler (I have an outdoor grill and a smokehouse for that kind of stuff). I'm just not into the kind of gonzo wokking and "blackened" searing at lead-melting temperatures that would make my kitchen smoke up like a brushfire. If you look at some of the NXR threads from three years ago, you'll see numbers of posts from folks who happily made do with 400 cfm OTR microwaves. (IIRC, Nunyabiz1 posted photos of his set-up.) So, could you get away with the 30" wide, 20" deep Kobe RA094 over an NXR? Sure. Is it worth purchasing for better speed controls? Never seen one in action so I really can't help with that. Maybe others will have direct experience with your chosen models.

I agree! I love Costco, too! I'm hoping the NXR will be relatively quiet and function well, but ours won't be in for about 2 weeks (as long as we stay on schedule). I can provide an update once it's in, but that may not help you much since it sounds like you'll have yours around the same time. I will say that it looks substantial and high quality, so hoping its function is on par with its looks!

The bit about removing the NXR logo was something I found while searching the forum. Here's the link: NXR badge removal. I didn't find any user reviews either, unfortunately, so I based my decision on the few reviews on the Costco website and Kobe hood reviews.

The NXR has the same instruction manual as the Kobe CH-100 SQB-1. The only difference I could find was that the NXR has halogen lights while the Kobe CH-100 SQB has LEDs.

Any follow up comments from anyone who installed one of the NXR hoods? We are considering one and would love to hear comments now after 2 1/2 yrs of use. Thanks!

I LOVE this range hood. I love it. The blower/motor is really strong and sucks up every last bit, I do end up cleaning it frequently (easy). The noise doesn’t bother me, I doubt it’s noisier than most other fans and I don’t mind because it’s actually doing something. By comparison I hate using the Kobe in our other house now. Fit and finish is where they may be keeping the cost down, seams aren’t as seamless as the Kobe, steel finish not as perfect but I don’t care. My kitchen will never show up in a magazine so I don’t need a range hood to be a beautiful feature. It works so well, I’ve actually considered getting another one and stowing it away for the day we move to a different house. Mine is a 36” over a 30” range.
