Electric Fence: circuit breaker trips when ground is connected
Comments (7)Plenty of if's, and's, and but's, but you can be creative on your grounding, but I wouldn't try it with an AC charger. If lightning strikes your fence and the charger isn't grounded, your house wiring will take the hit. I use solar and battery operated chargers with the 1 ft ground stake but my fences are no more than 600 meters long and the ground is moist. Lightning strikes ruin only the charger (if the lightning kits don't work). For me, AC chargers aren't worth the hassel of installing them to a standard that will keep your insurance rates reasonable and damages fixed by the insurance company if something happens. Comments (7)It could be faulty equipment, faulty wiring or a faulty breaker. Temporairily disconnecting the smoke detectors can eliminate them as a cause. Swapping circuit breaker connections can rule that out. If you have an arc-fault circuit breaker, a loose connection can cause a trip. I'd check for a tight connection in the breaker panel (hot and neutral). Loose connections and intermittant short circuits can also be checked for at junction boxes on the citcuit, looking for any evidence of arcing. I'd start at the first junction box on the circuit and work towards the last....See MoreBreaker tripping in circuit with a contact
Comments (10)davidr: If we connect the house lights with the garage lights, and the short circuit is in the wiring between the house lights, then would I not trip the other circuit breaker? I think this arrangement was done from day one by the original electrician, and the whole purpose was to use one Intermatic timer to control all the outdoor flood lights, and for some reason two circuits were used. The Intermatic timers like the T101 are so cheap, they could have used two timers so the garage flood lights were on one and the house flood lights were on another. By now it is probably time to stop speculating and at least get an electrician out for one hour to tell me what was originally done - I am curious, and then either get a test procedure to fix the problem and restore the house flood lights or make a new installation....See MoreCircuit Breaker Tripping
Comments (12)You can check inside the fixtures, and at junction boxes you have access to. these are often common places for failures to occur. An actual failure in the branch circuit cables is not as common, but if there is a weak spot in old insulation even a nearby lightning strike can produce enough further damage to trip a breaker (and ruin a section of cable by producing a permanently damaged spot in the insulation). We used to use 'meggers' (mega volt meters) to produce high voltage to trouble shoot these types of problems, but most modern digital meters in resistance mode on a turned off and disconnected circuit are more than adequate for checking insulation for weak spot.
