I finally had success grafting a rose on to fortuniana!!! After many many many failed attempts one finally stuck! I tried a variety of methods and chip budding turned out to be the one that worked. After reading an article that explained that the most important factor on chip budding was to be sure that the green tissue (not the white bark) was connecting because that's where it would adhere I gave it a shot. And it worked.

The variety is Queen of Sweeden and as you can see I chip budded several buds all down the stem, but two took so I'm really happy. The buds are finally beginning to swell so I know they're good to go.

Now I'm wondering if I should pot it up or put it in the ground. Any suggestions?

Congratulations SoFL - just a question - did you use anything to stabilise the bud onto the stem? Parafilm, elastic band or something?

What I found for myself.. In order to be ready for gardening season, you have to take care about yourself in winter. Which means gym, or any other activities you can find to keep yourself fit. Summer will bring it all back, but spring is usually the most hard time to adjust. One year I made myself to keep moving in winter(I hate gyms), and spring work was much easier. This year it wouldn't be that easy - long sedating winter and I guess very short spring...

This is great! Unfortunately, at this point it's hard to imagine it changing anyone's mind. I belong to a couple of health-related Facebook groups, and the amount of "misinformation" being shared is staggering. People can be so susceptible to it, and make it a big part of their "research." It's a brainwashing, and I wish I knew a way to combat it. The consequences are so serious.

Yes I used para film to keep it in place. I cut it off about a month ago because so many of the buds were dead and I thought it was another looser. But I noticed these two were still green so I kept it going :)

I mean they barely even look attached with the space you can see between them, but they are attached and alive. I just hope the bond is strong enough to support the branches that will eventually form there. I do plan on keeping them staked indefinitely because pretty much all fort grafted roses should remain staked.

Isn't it satisfying? Just think, this summer while the weather is hot you can root a bunch of Fortuniana sticks & then bud everything you want to them.

Is the Fort. already rooted? If you're seeing roots coming out the holes in the cup, sure, I'd go ahead & repot it into a gallon pot to encourage it to grow & to PUSH THOSE BUDS INTO CANES!

Congrats SoFL. I have done a fair bit of grafting before. Fortuniana is not the easiest rose to graft onto hence the premium price you pay for them. Some varieties are easier than others to bud. Budding is definitely the way to go but IMHO usually we keep the Rootstock bushy and actively growing when we bud the scion onto it in summer when the sap is flowing strongly. I have never tried to bud anything onto a stick before. I am surprised it can work at all! The actively growing rootstock provides energy to the plant. We only trim the rootstock top bits off when the grafted rose has shot out beautiful new shoots and growing strongly.

So Fragrancenutter, you think I should have left the fortuniana leaves on the stem and not cut them off until the budded sections start to grow and produce leaves of their own?

I had read somewhere that cutting off all the fort eyes and leaves would force it to grow via the budded eyes and so that's why I did that. But now that you mention it, it now has no way to feed itself since it has no leaves. I hope it survives.

That's what I did to ensure strong new growth from the bud, but if your fortuniana was a strong well grown plant then there should be enough energy from the existing roots to force a new shoot out. Next time try waiting for the new shoots to come up before cutting the leaves of the rootstock off and you will get stronger plants.
