What is wrong with my African violet?
Comments (4)â¢Posted by marguerite Ireland It needs water, and soon ! Either that or the roots are all dead. If that is the case, then the plant would still suffer dehydration even if the media is moist. However, if the media feels dry, it may not be wicking the water as is needed. When using one of the self-watering containers, one can't use just any old mix, as I recall. It needs to hold some moisture but still be "airy". The folks on the AV forum would know more. Also, assuming you bought the plant from a BBS, did you completely remove the crappy peat media it was likely planted in before putting it in the self-watering pot? If not, that is another issue. Comments (7)Self-watering posts often do not work the way they are supposed to. They are too porous and let in too much moisture resulting n the soil always being wet and root rot sets in, which shows up first in the crown. If the crown is rotted, then the plant is gone. You can still try to remove a couple of leaves and revive them in water then root them in a separate plastic solo cup with perlite that is slightly moistened. AVs are a speciality, unless someone is familiar with their care, the advice they give is unlikely to work. They do not have much of a root system, so over-watering is the most frequent way they die. They need to dry out slightly between waterings. The self-waterig pots that are specially made in the U.S. by a woman who makes them specifically for AVs will work. But not the store-bought ones. Usually, the plastic pots work best, or unglazed clay pots would be second choice. Comments (4)In April I received a mini rose from a friend and I tried to keep it in the house for my enjoyment. However, no amount of watering carefully, full light or not kept it from declining. It started to get yellow leaves and dry up. Towards the midddle of May I took it and planted it in a big pot on my patio with some violets and gave it some rose food. It is now Aug. and my yellow rose is beautiful. It has been blooming almost since the time I planted it outdoors. I planted it on the east side of the house so it gets full sun in the morning and shade later in the afternoon and evening. Now I just need to figure out how to keep it over the cold months....See MoreSomething Is Wrong....Please Tell Me What To Do
Comments (10)Donna, I could get in a lot of trouble saying this but if you are SURE they are not getting fed and they will be goners. 1. call a rehabber, any rehabber, anywhere, get help from a phone call. 2. get wax worms and feed those babies yourself. Try to feed them while they are still in the nest in the box. Skeuwer the worm on a hot dog stick or something you can poke in the box. If they dont eat...well I have been known to bring the whole nest inside and hand feed babies with tweesers, then replace the nest babies and all. You MUST be sure this is a last resort. You have been here over a year and you have been great about learning and helping. Just remember I have been here 7 years and I still panic. OBSERVE as closly as you can. Be SURE they are not getting fed before you act. I watched 3 baby TRES die last year because I did not act on what I thought the 1 remaining parent had under controll (Im sure you remember). I know it was Natures way but it still haunts me to this day that I did nothing. I didn't know they were starving before my eyes, I didn't think the parent would let that happen. Yup prolly against the law, oh well the bird police have only come to my door once and thats when I called them to come put a turkey down that had avian pox. by the time they got here (6 days after I called) the turkey had already suffered a sad death. If you are SURE it's do or die, I say do....See More4blossoms
