Brown, Black, Purple, ..Tomatoes.

I am into Brown, Black, Purple, ..Tomatoes. It is sort of my tomato theme this year. Red tomatoes are fine but browns are something else.

Here is a list of what is growing in my garden :

== CHEROKEE PURPLE

== BLACK FROM TULA

==JAPANESE BLACK TRIFELE

== ARBUZNYI

== BROWN (BLACK ?) CHERRY

== KUMATO

So far CP is far ahead of the crowd w/ lots of buds, flowers and tiny fruits. Black from Tula is just flowering. My other favorite , JBT, is moving along real slowly. So are Brown Cherry and Arbuznyi (which was germinated at the 3rd attempt) are behind. Kumato was also started maybe a month late.

So how many brown/black are you growing and how are they coming along, so far ?

PS: I have also an Indigo Rose. But It is more blue, to me.

My Cherokee Purple volunteer bit the dust already - showed up in December so that could be part of the problem, heh. The plant it volunteered from last year only produced about 4 tomatoes (apparently I missed at least one!), so I'm not overly upset, although I had let the volunteer grow to see if it did any better. Maybe later, they're not getting a good reputation with me.

I decided to try Black Krim instead of CP, and put in two plants just in case. The foliage looks wonderful and they're growing like gangbusters, but only one small golf-ball sized fruit so far on two 5'ish tall plants while most of my other tomatoes are loaded. We'll see. On the upside, my Black Cherry is going insane and we're already eating them. That one will come back next year, definitely.

You'll have to give an update of which on your list you enjoyed the most at the end of the year so I can try out something next time that might work for me :)

We're running two and maybe three browns this year...Cherokee purple and chocolate cherry and an f2 wildcard from a mix of cp/stupice/evergreen. We've got baby fruit set in the choc and flowers on the cp. The f2 wildcard is way behind because I'm cruddy at starting from seed;) hopefully we'll get some flowers in the next few weeks from that one because it was a total standout last time we grew it.

Over on the Tomato Pest & Diseases forum you'll find a long post called Problem Solver 2. Just use the forum search for that form if it isn't still on the front page. It is filled with links to images of the different tomato diseases. Browse them and see if you can find a pic that matches your problems. Off hand it sounds like you have a fungus problem (the black spots) from your description but I can't be sure without seeing it or a great many more details. If that is the case then spraying with an anti-fungus spray such as Daconil (sold under several different names) will help control it. The purpleing leaves and veins are due to stress - normal for a stressed plants - and will disappear once you ID the other problem and treat it. Good luck. I tried Large Barred Boar for the first time last year and was blown away! It was by far the best black tomato I've ever grown with good production and excellent flavor-better than Cherokee Purple, which I almost always grow. My Cherokee Purples were also good last year. I tried Indian Stripe and like someone above noted, they were quite a bit bigger (one was easily 2 lbs). They were tasty but not quite as good as Cherokee Purple. I've also grown Black Krim, Black Prince, and Japanese Black Trifele (that one is VERY productive). I recall all were good but not as good as the aforementioned ones. I think I may try Cherokee Chocolate this year.

The resistant varieties are: Payette, Owyhee, Super Star VF, Red Lode VF, Ida-Red VF, Parma VF, Bicentennial VF, Rowpac VF, Columbia VF, Roza VF, and Salad Master VF. You'll have to look up what ones are black. Good luck, CTV sucks. I suggest you pull out any tumbleweeds you can get to, that's the main vector plant that the leaf hoppers are feeding on and spreading from.

You folks in zones 7-9 are way ahead of me. I'm growing CP, Black Krim and OSU

Blue this year. They have been in the ground about 2 weeks now and are coming along well.

Way to go , folks. I like this.
Yeah, lets keep reporting back as the season progresses. I will definitely do that, as the OP of the thread.
I am pretty sure of my CPs performance, since this is the third year growing it. JBT, did ok last year. Not a workhorse but fruits compared to CP in taste.
Now Black from Tula, Arbuznyi , Brown Cherry and Kumato need to pass the test in order to return next season.
Anybody is growing Indian Stripe ? I have read so many positive reviews on it.

Growing Indian Stripe in the Okanogan River Valley. Other than my Sunsugar (cherry tom), it along with Opalka have my first fruit showing! It and BrandyBoy have the most blossoms.

Jw, where are you in E.WA?
A day or 2 of high temps should not be as bad. Try and shake the flowers to get pollinated before the heat wave. As long as they are pollinated (as much as possible) fruits will set and grow.

Nugrdnnut, it seems that we are in about the same fruit setting situation... lots of blossoms ...fruits setting and growth is pretty slow.. But I remain optimistic. One of the CP has 4 trusses, 2 blooming and 2 just buds. BfromT. is coming along ok. Once we pass the next 3 days of cool snap they should get to work.

I'm out in tri cities. Looks like our forecast shifted again but this time for the good..back down to low 90s at the end of the week. Phew!

Good to hear that. Let those blossoms have chance to get pollinated. Then heat is not going a problem. Also the highs last just for few hours around mid day then maybe 15 hours out of 24 temps should be fine for pollination, IFF the night lows are under 70F ?.
Alright. Let those dark color tomatoes grow. I can't wait to see the ripe ones. I know some of our friends dow south ( from FL to TX, AZ, CA.) already are harvesting. We should have our turn pretty soon. hehe
