Small rant-the hospital fun just never ends
Comments (18)"She had a typed up list of meds she was taking and knew that she needed her asthma meds at all times. They knew, they said. It was written and stated verbally more than once. None of her asthma meds were to ever be withheld. Not one time. Everyone eveywhere knew it." A list of a patient's home medicines is taken as part of a history and customarily attached to the chart. But, what I am asking is are you sure they were on her chart as an order to be given? If they were, and she hadn't had them for days, SOMEBODY made the decision not to administer them. One issue is who and why? Since you say she didn't have them since Saturday, did she or you ask that question before her episode? It doesn't feel right that everyone who had given patient care to her would have missed it, and not questioned why that was the case. This is exactly where I was coming from when I addressed the flow of information. If she had been getting her meds right along, was there a possibility this would not have happened? I have to make the assumption the breathing treatment was given as a new stat order. Did I understand correctly that order had issued for a matter of hours and not acted upon? Did any one of the floor staff catch that fact well before she called you? Did any of them try to expedite the treatment by communication to the physician or pharmacy directly or did they leave it up to another department to follow through on it? At the facilites where I worked all the floor staff who were caring for a patient or administering meds would have looked that drug up in the a reference and educated ourselves to it's generic name and likely been in contact with the pharmacy about it quickly if there were an issue. We were required by our own policy to do this with every medication. Good, good policy. Is that a policy in that institution as well? Your description of the actions of the resp tech and LPN still leaves a question in my mind whether they had access to the drug to be administered. If that were the case, how could they give it? Were they trying to calm the patient to decrease her respiratory demand until they could get and administer the drug? Could they have been just as anxious as you or your mother, but doing the best they could under the situation? I guess what I am saying is that I still would question this a communications issue and also wonder if it could also be an accountability issue. Checks and balances likely exist in the system to prevent those things from happening. You might be surprised who "could" be considered accountable. Your doc did the right thing for initiating a complaint, and I'm not in any way saying your anger is inappropriate. You should be upset.......but I'm wondering at this point.......at whom. I'm not implying any particular member of the staff is at fault nor guiltless. I'm saying that an internal look-see is appropriate to address those issues not apparent from the outside. Been there and done that myself as an advocate. I'm very glad it turned out OK....See Morenew: mnf - ghouls just wanna have fun - 2nd edition

Comments (43)The baked instead of mashed I could handle...I'd just mash them up and put butter on them right there. But no gravy?? Jeepers, what do they do with all their drippings and innards? Do they not like gravy or is it just that nobody knows how to make a good one? In my twenties, I dated a Japanese man for several years. In his family, you weren't to eat anything on New Years Day until you had Mochi soup. On the seventh day of the New Year, you were supposed to eat a special seven Spring vegetable rice soup for good luck. Because all the family would come for New Years Day, the Mother of the family combined these traditions, and would make the soup with seven vegetables and mochi instead of rice. It wasn't vegetable soup like we think of it, but a very light fish broth, with the seven vegetables and the Mochi. Now, if you've not had Mochi, an explanation is in order. Mochi is made by taking a sweetish glutinous rice and pounding it into a sticky paste in a stone mortar. Then it is formed into little round, slightly flattened cakes and dusted in rice flour to keep them from sticking to each other, to the package, to the plate to you...you get the picture. Anyway, these are dropped into the boiling soup, the Japanese version of dumplings, where they hold their shape until you try to fish them out with your chopsticks to eat them. At this point, they stretch, and stretch, and when you take a bite, you chew and chew. Believe it or not, I enjoyed those sticky, gooey, bland piles of rice goop. I liked them better toasted though. If you put them in the oven or over a fire, the outside would get crisp and toasted, and suddenly split open, and the gluey mass would ooze out. These were eaten as a snack with a mixture of soy sauce and sugar as a dipping sauce. Mochi can also be a sweet, in which case the glutinous rice is sweetened, and the little cakes stuffed with a sweetened red or white bean (whole or pureed) filling, and dusted or flavored with various things. These are not cooked, but eaten cool or at room temperature. It's something like eating a soft fondant wrapped around marzipan, if you can imagine that more easily....See MoreHoliday Quizz --- for Just for Fun!
Comments (13)1. Egg nog or hot chocolate? BOTH - sorry! Egg Nog w/ nutmeg or Hot Chocolate w/ a shot of Butterscotch Schnapps. 2. Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree? Wrap, wrap, wrap, wrap, wrap! & he always seems to know what color's we've decorated in that yr.! 3. Colored lights on tree/house or white? White in various sizes & finishes. I would like to do the house in colored lights just one yr. though. Not the tree though! 4. Do you hang mistletoe? I keep meaning to! My Nana ALWAYS did! 5. When do you put your decorations up? Usually 2nd wk. of Dec. although I'm finally getting it together & we've already begun! 6. What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)? Hmmmm.... My mom's corn pudding. But her mashed potatoes are perfect. Her Ham is too. Did I mention her cherry pies?! 7. Favorite holiday memory as a child? Well.... It's not my favorite but my family discusses it & laughs about it every yr. at my expense. When I was little I would get so worked up, excited & anxious about Christmas Day that on Christmas Eve I'd start getting sick & w/o fail every Christmas morning until I was 8 or so, I'd throw up as soon as my feet would hit the flr. Everyone would wait for me every morning while someone took me to the bathroom as soon as I woke up. 8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa? When I pulled the beard off of Santa & made all of the kids start crying. My mom always reminds me of how I yelled "YOU'RE NOT THE REAL SANTA CLAUS!" & yanked his beard off. We were asked to leave. 9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve? Yes, it was the only way my mom could get my nerve's to settle. DH asks me every yr. if I need to open a present on Christmas Eve & I always say 'No thanks, I'm a big girl now!' 10. How do you decorate your Christmas tree? In gold. Also with ornaments that look like old mirrors and old Russian icons. Okay - that sounds really pretty!!!! This yr. I have a red whimsical tree in the LR, I'm aiming for an elegant woodland tree in the office & I'd like to do a small cars, planes, trains & boats theme on a small white tree in the playroom. 11. Snow: love it or hate it? LOVE IT! But I'd better be inside enjoying that doctored up hot chocolate by a fire. 12. Can you ice skate? Nope. That'd mean I'd have to go outside. 13. Do you remember your favorite gift? There are so many great gifts, but last yr. my sister who lives out of state & doesn't have much money to spare, put together a small basket of her favorite things. It makes me feel like we're together during the yr. sharing & introducing each other to new things. You can't beat that! 14. Whats the most important thing about the holidays for you? The shear magic, wonderment & joy of it all. My heart just sings - it feels like anything is possible! 15. What is your favorite holiday dessert? My mom's cherry pie. 16. What is your favorite holiday tradition? Watching It's A Wonderful Life w/ a bottle of red wine w/ DH. 17. What tops your tree? Usually a finial but I just found a great angel that I hid in the back at Bombay. 18. Which do you prefer, giving or receiving? Totally giving! In my family we look all yr. long wherever we go for each other & we never ask for lists. You never know when you'll find the most perfect thing at some little dive on a wknd. trip in August & it was probably under $10! DH's family seems to always ask for lists & go at the last minute. Then they never get me anything off of it! It's taken me a long time to get used to the whole list & generic wrapping/ bag thing but I finally have. 19. What is your favorite Christmas song? Holy Night by Bing but I want a Hippopotamus for Christmas is a real close runner up! 20. Candy canes??? Sometimes at DS1's insistence. He always wants you to have what he has. 21. Favorite Christmas movie? Either The Santa Claus or Elf. 22. What do you leave for Santa? In our family -- we ALWAYS leave out the Best Scotch and shortbread. Mum always says that Santa will need a "warm-up" by the time he gets to our house ...... even when I was very little -- Santa always got a crystal glass of The Best. Milk & cookies but I think we may be starting a new tradition this yr.! Thanks Teacats!...See MoreUser
