The day after the tick bite, I visited the orthopedist.

I'd been referred to a hip specialist, but I was certain the pain was originating in the sacroiliac joint in my back. The hip specialist, who has an excellent reputation, wanted very badly to blame the pain on my hip (and, I suppose, perform a hip replacement), but admitted--to his credit--he could find nothing wrong with it. Even the x-ray showed a normal hip.

Ah, the x-ray . . . he was looking at my hips on the x-ray, and I was admiring my interesting pelvic bones, when he said, "Whoa--look at that!" (Not something you want to hear from your doctor, but at least he didn't exclaim, "OMG!" LOL)

He pointed to my spine, which is suppose to come straight up, at a 90º angle from the horizontal pelvis. Instead, it appeared to be at about a 45º angle, veering sharply to the right. It looked awful--a little sickening. I wondered how I could still be walking around. I knew I had scoliosis, and I saw the C-curve in an x-ray about five years ago, but I don't remember it looking as bad as this.

He said, "That's the source of your problems." He ordered physical therapy 3 x a week. He didn't seem all that optimistic about the outcome, but maybe I'm projecting. If PT doesn't help, I guess I'll find a back specialist.
