I would discourage planting any Norway Maple varieties (Royal Red & Crimson King). They tend to cast very dense shade (so dense that grass has difficulty), are an invasive tree species, and often suffer from poor nursery culture leading to an early decline/death.

The Gingko is a fine choice are the Scarlet Jewel (Red Maple - Acer rubrum variety) and the Autumn Blaze Maple (Red Maple crossed with Silver Maple = Acer x freemanii).

a pic of the house from the street would help me.. i am visual in nature ..

and i would pick a heritage tree for the decades or century ... and paint the door ... rather than choose the tree for a temp door color ...

being maple season here in MI .. ask yourself.. if you would enjoy picking up a couple billion helicopters per year, as the tree matures... pulling them out of flower bed.. gutters.. awnings ... cars .. carpeting.. lol ... if you insist on a maple ... get one that doesnt seed.. if there is such a monster ...

now is the time ... to have your local NURSERY .. order in something sublime for fall planting ... as their offerings are rather uni dimensional ...

dont know where you are.. it matters... but ginkgo is a slow motion tree in MY MI ....

are you planning on doing this yourself or hiring out the job ... do you know about the best size to plant.. etc .... instant gratification in tree buying.. can be very problematic.. unless you hire out a warranty ....

How wide is the area available to plant between the sidewalk and the street? Are there overhead wires? Before you can get serious suggestions about specific trees, we really need to know what the restrictions to the trees' dimensions can be.

No conifers?!!
I wonder why that rule was written. I can think of no logical reason other than a complete ignorance of the range of conifers available and how they can add interest and value to the landscape. You'd think at least a windbreak would be called for here and there, to make the winters a little more bearable.

Hi,

There are no overhead wires and approx. 9' x 28' available for planting (see pics below). Other than the restrictions on certain varieties, we were told that once mature, trees have to have clearing of 16'.

BTW, my husband nixed the ginko on the blvd idea b/c they are such slow movers from what we've been told. I think he would like to see a maple but it is really determining which would be the best variety.

I imagine that the conifers are a concern for sight lines when going out of the driveway.

My preference would be the gingko of the choices you listed. They are really beautiful trees when they have gotten some size. If you don't put one on the boulevard (I grew up referring to the space between the sidewalk and road as the "tree lawn") I would put one at the top of the hill on the flat part of the lawn. I would not use the Norway maple.

I think with the hill and the height of the house, you would prefer a taller tree like the Scarlet Jewel or the Autumn Blaze Maple as opposed to something smaller like a Japanese tree lilac (Syringa reticulata) or a Canada red chokecherry (Prunus virginiana 'Schubert' ).

Not being a good color person I would suggest, if you can wait until the fall, go to the nurseries or the Arboretum during fall color time and look at the different Red maple and Red x Silver hybrids to see what you like. Not a fan of Autumn Blaze and tends to color and defoliate very late here which is not ideal for a street tree (it defoliates after street sweeping and most of the Norway maples do).
