Yes, IE. First thing I wanted to do is install FF so I'd know what I was doing, and I've restarted it a bunch of times.. Just did a complete restart, just to make sure.

is it a wireless keyboard? What happens if you type something like www.google.com and hit enter? Do you reach Google? Can you see your typing in Notepad or your word processor? What about composing an email?

Press Alt T, then choose Internet Options. In the Window that Opens choose the Advanced Tab. Once the Advanced Tab opens Click on Reset (towards the bottom of the window) to reset all Internet Explorer options. Hopefully this will get you back to where you can type in the Address Bar!

Another thing to check would be Bios settings, although that's a little doubtful as you haven't messed with that.

No, I'm not tired of any of your questions. I so appreciate the help. Now to answer: Asus is a little laptop, so keyboard attached. No typing shows in google, or email or anything else. But this (the changes I've made are on both) is something to do with the router. (No networkk connection) I unplugged it, hoping it would reset, but no. Now I've got the Asus in fridge, rebooted PC and can type. Haven't gotten to try anything else yet.

Very new to this router, wireless stuff. I was hoping not to network computers. Need coffee.

Is this a new router? Have you had any recent power outages? Do you have a separate modem or is this an all in one modem/router? I can't really grasp why a network connection would cause you to be unable to type. You said that you got on the desktop and read the replies to your question. That **seems *** to indicate that you do have an internet connection at least on the desktop.

Since you went through the new laptop setup, I would strongly suggest looking in Control Panel for Keyboard input options, make sure that your input method is keyboard with your preferred language.

Why do you have the laptop in the fridge? Isn't that crowding the milk?

I'll try to answer before running off to class. Separate router, since just before Christmas. DK how I could read, then not type...hmmm.Was there, then gone? Doesn't make sense, I know.

Have done the control panel keyboard settings until I'm blue in the face, in fact all settings. It's in the fridge because everything worked fine until that, and I needed to get a connection. Block it's signal.

Here is what is on router. PC upstairs, roku/netflix, laptop downstairs(temporary, I think) and then the ASUS. All were working fine until now, which is why it's in fridge. Seldom use more than one at a time. Could it be too much for it? Milk is fine, veggies might not be happy. :}

It would help if you answered PK's question, " What happens if you type something like www.google.com and hit enter?" That would tell if the characters are being entered, but you just can't see them.

So the preferences you're talking about seem to be come kind of Asus preferences for the laptop that came up, right ? Those might have links to the bios, which could be a source of the problem. I can look that up later.

I can't see that the router would have anything to do with it either, except in some very unlikely scenarios. Resettting a router is pretty easy, if necessary. Usually the first thing to try is to reboot it - a soft reset. If you're really having problems you can hard reset it to defaults using the reset button. But I just can't see how the router could have anything to do with it.

What was going on with the "fridge" idea there - also curious. Did you think the router was overheating ? If that's really what you're doing, the moisture in the fridge could cause problems, so not really a great idea. Maybe you were trying to quarantine it ?

When you say you're hoping not to network the computers - what do you mean by that ?

Overall it really helps if you answer all questions being asked and give full explanations with specifics . . . . We're all happy to help but when you throw in a "fridge" story like that it throws everyone off, without a complete explanation.

I think she was trying to block the wireless signal. Breenthumb, there should be a switch to turn wireless off and on. Look in the box for the quickstart guide.

Yes, I was trying to block the wireless signal. NOW, I'm at the Y. No problem signing into their network with ASUS. I've downloaded FF, adblock plus, and everything is working fine. Even got myself signed into GW. Heading home to see what happens next.

Hoping not to network computers means (to me) don't need/want all favorites, files, pictures, etc, on this from my PC.

When you say Asus in the fridge, you mean Asus laptop. or Asus router ?
Either way I doubt that will do anything and could possibly damage something.
On the laptop indeed there should be a physical switch or you can go into network settings and disable the wireless adapter. But then of course you'd have no wireless internet connection.
If it's the router, there is a setting in the software to turn it off. Again, not sure what's to be gained there though.

[Networking usually just means a device is on a network, either wirelessly or wired. Sharing files is what you can do with that kind of setup. If you're on the internet, you're networked through the router, but may or may not be able to share files with other computers in your house or building.]

Well. I'm home and so far everything is connected and working fine. Sorry I wasn't clear this AM. This laptop was in the fridge to block its signals to router, only way I knew, then, to connect to internet. No idea what could have been going on, but thanks so much for helping. So far, so good. On many Laptops there is either a Physical Switch on one of the Edges of the computer or you may need to use the FN (Function Key) and one of the F Buttons (F1 - F12) at the top of the keyboard. On my Acer Laptop I'm on right now to disable the WiFi connection I need to press the FN + F3 keys. To enable I press the same two keys again!

Not from the router or PC, to the router. I put the new little notebook in the fridge to block it because, somehow, same problems were showing up in the desktop and other laptop. I couldn't type on anything.. It still had connection on porch & garage. It seemed like a good idea at the time, and it worked so that I could connect here.

Kbarb, network was the wrong word. What I was hoping not to do was share files.

The instructions that came with this has three steps. Charge your notebook, Lift to open display panel, Press start button.

I looked up the user manual on your model, not supposed to let it get below 41 degrees Fahrenheit, FYI.

OK, It's not anything I'd do again. I just knew I had to go out soon and it was jamming up my other connections. Wasn't in there long. I took it with me when I left the house.

Sandy, Didn't mean to get anything started here. Just wanted to let you know for the future that the Icebox isn't a good plan. You could ruin your device/devices you've spent so much of your hard earned money on!

My aunt ruined a Hard Drive on a very nice computer once. She brought it in from being out in the cold car for over a week (23° F), and then plugged it in and pushed the power button. She is very lucky that she didn't fry more of the computer!

Just be careful with things like this! At the worst it could have caused an electrical fire or you could have even electrocuted yourself! Please if your in question of what to do don't hesitate to ask here or at another Forum. I'm sure someone would have advised you to not put it in the fridge if you would have asked "Is it ok to put my laptop in the fridge?"

You're all too funny! I've learned my lesson. And good info about letting it warm up from a cold car. We always hear about keeping them cool. Never about warming them up.

Putting Bananas in the Fridge is Okay, It slows the Ripening Process. The Peels won't/don't look very appetizing but the inside will still be delicious! Same thing holds true for your tomatoes as far as the ripening process, they'll just last longer in the fridge. With your computer, the insides takes a beating in the fridge and may not be edible afterwards!
