buds falling off
Comments (8)Hey there, Could be that its just acclimating to new environment. I'm assuming it was already in bud when you received it? Where do you have the plant? Inside window I assume? Watering with ice cubes is probably not your best bet. Post a picture of the plant for us and we'll take a look. Since its most likely potted in sphagnum moss, you need to be careful not to over water and rot the roots. The buds could also be blasting due to being overly dry. If the roots are nice and green though, that usually means it has enough water. Generally speaking though, when you buy a phal from a store or nursery, you will only have the flowers for a week or two. Your next flower spike should produce longer lasting flowers as it will be more adjusted to your growing environment. Dont over think these plants, they really aren't very difficult once you understand them. Stick them in a bright window with filtered light (eastern exposure or filtered southern exposure). Being indoors, winter time in KY, I suspect it will need watered every 5-7 days depending on how tightly packed that moss is in there. Remember, if the moss is crunchy and dry, water thoroughly with room temp water. If the moss is still moist and roots are green, wait another couple days. Over watering is the number one cause of death for these plants! Send us a pick of the plant and the potting mix. Good luck! Comments (13)Thanks for your replies. The plants are in a family room which is adjacent to the kitchen where there are sometimes fruits in the fruit bowl. However, the distance is at least ten or more feet. Yes, as someone asked before - this has been going on for years! I did ONCE get one of my plants to bloom. It was while it was outside for the summer where incidentally, it was watered often because it was in the path of the automatic sprinklers. It probably also got watered with 20-20-20 as my kids help me with those types of chores are are not particulary discerning. There are no smokers in the house and the kitchen is well ventilated with a powerful axhaust fan. In thinking about this some more, I feel that the watering and feeding may be the issue. I use an all purpose plant food at a diluted strength. Can someone recommend a proper fertilizer and how often to use it? It seems as though the plant has just enough energy to set buds, but not enough to mature them. Also, in reading other posts I'm beginning to think that some of the plants I have are not planted in the proper medium. As I said above, the ones I got from a neighbor are in something more like dirt rather than bark or moss. I will work on getting some pictures up this afternoon. Comments (19)I'd love a cutting! Right now we've finally got one pair of flowers opening up, and a total of seven more buds in various stages of emerging. I'm not entirely convinced the woman is correct that the flowers will be red, but there is a blush developing on the petals, so perhaps. I've never had one before, so I have no clue at what point color develops. I don't care at this point, I'm just glad to have flowers! Anyway, if there's a cutting to spare in the Spring, let me know, maybe I've even got something I can swap for it! Comments (7)Thank you so much, I'm glad to know this is 'normal,' though very frustrating...YES, we're in the drought zone - Piedmont, NC, & I've been watering constantly, too. The clump I'm most concerned about lives beside a tree - not helping matters I'm sure. Your answers make good sense. Thank you, thank you!...See MoreIvan Ferdous
