My buds keep falling off!

I am a frequent follower in the kitchen and bathroom forums and have found those to be so helpful I thought I would pick your collective brains for some advice.

I am a sucker for the grocery store orchids. I buy them while in bloom, enjoy them for a month or so, and then they cause me nothing but heartache. I have several types, but always the same problem. Each year they faithfully send up healthy, multi-branched spikes and develop a dozen or more little buds. Some grow to the size of a grape, others a pea, but they always shrivel and fall off. I have had some of these plants five or more years. Never a single bloom. What am I doing wrong? I really don't know much about orchids in particular. I water them sparingly, keep them in a South facing window and put them outside in dappled shade in the summer (zone 5). Our home humidification system keeps the house at about 30%. .Other than the fact that they won't bloom I'd describe them as healthy. Any advice would be warmly welcomed.
