I often give newly planted plants of all kinds a bit of shade for a while using a lawn chair or whatever is stable in whatever your wind conditions will be and will cast a mid-day and early afternoon shadow. They may have not been in the same conditions at the nursery, and roots are usually disturbed some during planting, so the plant is showing some stress, and shade will reduce this.

Wilting will be an issue during the first year's summer
months. But once the plants become established in 1-3 years, wilting should be reduced. It
never goes completely away so, it pays to keep an eye on the leaves during the
summer.

If the wilting episode seems extreme and makes you gasp,
immediately give them 1/2 gallon of water but otherwise, see if the soil
feels dry and water if it feels almost dry or dry. When the soil is moist, the shrubs should recover on their own by nightfall or by the next
morning. If still wilted by the next morning, give them water if the soil is
dry. But if the soil was moist or wet before nightfall, remained so in the morning and the plants remained wilted by morning, there could be a problem with root rot
(it causes wilting conditions 24/7 regardless how much water you give the
plants).

On a regular basis, when the soil is almost dry or dry, give
them 1 gallon of water per watering and increase to 1.5g in the summer months. Water the soil -not the leaves- early in the morning. If
your soil is sandy, increase watering amounts by 50%. To prevent root rot due
to watering too much or due to bad drainage, make sure you water when a finger
inserted into the soil to a depth of 4" feels almost dry or dry. And of
course, maintain 3-4" of mulch year around to conserve moisture and
lengthen the time between waterings.

Thank for the responses. I went out again last night and check the soil more thoroughly and it seems the soils 4-5 inches away from the dripline was still moist but the soil right under (what was transplanted from the bucket) was dry.

My soaker hose was maybe too far away from the hydranges. I moved it last night so we will see how it holds up now.

How close do you take the mulch to the middle branches? Right now i have them coming in under the dripline but still there is a 4inch circle in the middle that is exposed as I though I read not to mulch so close to the middle.

Drip irrigation and soaker hoses sometimes miss watering some sides of the plants so tweak as needed. In the first year, I try to hand water once weekly in the summer, as recommended by some of the local nurseries who say not to solely depend on the automatic system during the plant's first summer (our summers are extra hot).

If you can leave 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5.1 cm) of breathing room near the crown or base of the shrub, you'll be ok.
