Charcoal absorbs odors, so does baking soda, and newspapers...of course, the produck "Febreeze" but that would put moisture inside the case. Could be that as you use it the odor will go away.

You might try wiping it down w/ rubbing alcohol. I do that to all the vintage appliances I bring home, using old rags, paper towel & cotton swabs for the nooks & crannies. It really cuts oily , scummy grime. Just be careful not to scrub w/it - esp. on any gilt decorations.

Thanks to everyone! I'm going to try all of the suggestions. It's a lovely machine but right now it's sitting on my kitchen table and smelling up the whole kitchen...

Try spraying the gears with WD-40 until it runs off, moving the hand wheel as you do tpo make sure it penetrates, and wiping off the excess. Then re-oiling it with fresh oil.

And the felt, definitely replace it with a fresh piece.

I just replaced the felt pad in the oil pan of my featherweight, and immediately my little gem smells so much better. Now if I could find a miracle for the case. It's fall and cooler weather has come. No chance to set it out in the hot sun heat. I was hoping some Febreze with a small box of baking soda might do the trick. Any thoughts on that?

I doubt febreze will help, but you can alway try. I would go for a gentle cleaning, wiping it off with a very well wringed up cloth. Most importantly is proably airing out the case, keep the lid open and store the machine in a warm room. Sprinkle baking soda and replace it now and then should help. I once bought a zigzagger in a cardboard box that smelled strongly of cellar. It has taken me three or four years of storage on a book shelf with the lid off to air it out. It gradually gets better, but completely will take time.
