I grew banana tree in southeast georgia 4th year it was somewhat yellow in september. A vistor from KY came by one afternoon to get some wild grapes he said add 8 lbs 5-10-15 to tree next spring late feb. I cut truncks down to about 3 foot an add fertlizer that year there was no yellow look all green in oct. there was bunch banana that pop out. Every year after that I had 2 bunches banana's small but banana. Best time to look for banana bunch is day before Frost pick it if have bunch. Banana plant does like wet feet but don't grow in water incline that wet help mind there was sand and carpet grass in place I grew mind. People ho visited from cential fla. said mind tree look better theres. Potash more important as fertilizer than high nitegeon. If your truncks get 4 inches are larger cut them 4 foot up stalk if don't cut into green growth inside.

here ya go ga. 7b-8 depends on what map you look at.. plants that are going in greenhouse are app. 5-6' tall which are possibly going to fruit, if they fruit i'll keep them in buckets like the Dwarf Orinoco (pic below)and keep my fingers crossed. love these buckets as they're short and big around, this will help keep it from being top heavy. notice all leaves have been cut off except growing leaf. these leaves will yellow and die off after plant has been pulled, take a bit but will start to grow again in gh.. Dwarf Orinoco i've already pulled pups and potted up in 3 gal containers. these pups are about 12-14" with corm formed, they'll go to gh. plants that have fruit haven't been touched, as the bunches will be cut down before first frost to ripen inside. the ones that are expected to fruit in gh, pups are being cut down even with soil line.. this should give you a great big corm on pup next year.. mainly to help it fruit and ripen quicker. my tall fruiters will be dug up and all leaves are cut except growing leaf then stored under house. i don't cover, water or bother during winter . i do keep them off ground, they're stacked on top of old tires and one heat vent from house heating .. example of what you can get in 2 years growing tall plant, carries 5 bunches app. 7-9 fruits per hand. Tall Orinoco ? pic below has one d.o. in back middle with fruit, bunches will be cut before frost, to house to ripen. two 5' pups in front will be seperated and put into big wash pans like above and placed in gh for winter. the smaller pups will be potted up and put in gh. gh will only be kept just above freezing and will dip below at times, for short periods. gh is kinda like a moist zone 9 winter without the frost.. d.o. carried fruit last year to ripen this spring..

I'm actually not surprised by that at all. It is probably a Super Dwarf Cavendish. I kept one in a five gallon pot for three years with no signs of blooming, planted it outside the fourth year and let it die that winter after still no sign of bloom. With indoor conditions, a small pot, and 70 degree temps (too cool to get a banana to fruit), you might have it another nine years, lol! Super Dwarf Cavendish is notorious for not blooming until conditions are ideal. Pot that sucker up into a large pot, set it outside, fertilize and water it regularly, and see if you notice any difference. It might not bloom this year, but it will certainly be happier.

Funny story. Almost 30 years ago I moved from Wilmington, North Carolina to Tampa Bay. A friend told me, you are moving to Florida, take this banana plant. Up there, they keep them in containers and put them in their houses crawl space for the winter. This variety is not short; they run about 25 feet. But, they are not bothered too much by 27 degree nights. They get burned but come back and even give fruit the same year. The one in the photo had 29 degrees last winter. Others we have already harvested. I guess I could send a plant to someone really interested and willing to pay the expense or trade another fruit. I guess you could call this my North Carolina orinoco banana.
