9 yr old Dwarf Banana Plant has never produced any bananas?

Hi, I have a dwarf banana plant that I have had for about 9 years, it is about 3-4 feet and a appears to be in good health. I just has never produced any bananas. I no longer recall the name of the plant but it was suppose to fruit. Is there something I may be doing that has caused it to never fruit? Kept indoors at 70 degrees in a room with good sun. Any help would be greatly appricated.

Hello Susan,
It is difficult to correctly understand the situation.
If it has been kept indoors at 70F with good sun, it should
at least have bloomed even though it did not bear fruits.
If it once bloomed, it would die back and never existed for
9 years or so.
It it really banana tree?! It could be a similar plant like
banana. That must be cleared.

A pictue would be really good. At least that way it could be determined if it was a banana, or something mislabeled somehow. That does sound remarkable that one could grow that long and no sign of any maturity.

Choose a spot with lots of sun and protected from frost; like up against your house with a southern exposure. I ordered my dwarf banana plant from gurney's (not sure which species/cultivar it is), it produced bananas last summer, which I was not really expecting since I live in zone 5 and after its first summer it was too large for me to be able to get it outside so it has remained indoors. Mine gets up to about 6 or so feet. I have never experienced having my plants go dormant in the winter, the banana plant hasn't, so I water and fertilize year round. I suspect that the number of plant lights I have on my plants plays a big factor in this, haha. Best of luck with your banana plant(s), they are great plants! Karen

Super Dwarf Cavendish will fruit, but for best luck it has to be in a climate where it can survive all winter long OUTSIDE. The good thing about SDC is that you get a lot of pups, the bananas are VERY tasty when it fruits, and it can be used as an annual plant. You can afford to plant the main plant in the ground in the spring, and then keep a second one inside to get a few pups that can be used to propagate next years planting.

Just to see if it can be done, I tried this as an experiment. This is supposed to be a Double Mahoi...it didn't double, so I really can't be sure. It's growing and fruiting in an 18" diameter and 18" deep pot. The main trunk is 4 foot tall. It was planted as a one foot pup this past April and it's fruiting so I now know it can be done. So give it a shot. The only problem that I can see with the 12 foot tall variety is that it's going to be top heavy and might have a tendency to fall over. You'll definately need a bigger pot for that size and might want to try and stabilize the container somehow... ...here are a few pics... ...it has 3 pups left on it now and I've already removed a few and planted them in the ground... ...and the fruit ...good luck...Z

I'm actually not surprised by that at all. It is probably a Super Dwarf Cavendish. I kept one in a five gallon pot for three years with no signs of blooming, planted it outside the fourth year and let it die that winter after still no sign of bloom. With indoor conditions, a small pot, and 70 degree temps (too cool to get a banana to fruit), you might have it another nine years, lol! Super Dwarf Cavendish is notorious for not blooming until conditions are ideal.

Pot that sucker up into a large pot, set it outside, fertilize and water it regularly, and see if you notice any difference. It might not bloom this year, but it will certainly be happier.
